What a template is, and when to use one
A template is a finished video structure with the footage taken out. It already has the pacing, the number of clip slots, text styling and often a music track, so your job is to supply the clips.
Templates are a good fit when:
- You're short on time and want a good-looking reel in minutes.
- You post the same format often, such as weekly recaps or product drops.
- You're learning. Opening a template shows how cuts, text and audio fit together.
They're less suited to a one-of-a-kind story where you want full control over pacing. For that, start from a blank project with the first reel guide or plan with storyboards.
Find a template: Ideas and Inspiration
Edits keeps its discovery tools in two places, based on how the app is described by reviewers:
- The Ideas tab is where you collect what you save: reels, templates, audio collections and saved text styles. A template you saved earlier is here.
- The Inspiration tab is a feed of suggestions based on your saved items and previous use. Look for a style that fits your goal.
Save any template you like so it's waiting in Ideas the next time you start a project. For more ways to find trends and formats, see ideas and creative inspiration.
Tab names and layouts change as the app updates, so follow what your own screen shows.
Use a template, step by step
- Open Inspiration or Ideas and pick a template that fits your goal and the number of clips you have.
- Tap Use template to start a project built around that style.
- Add your footage. Choose clips or photos from your gallery, or record new ones, and place them in the slots.
- Play it through to see how your footage fits the pacing.
- Adjust and export when you're happy.
Pick clips with a similar look, such as the same lighting and orientation, so the final video feels consistent. Shoot a little extra at the start and end of each clip so trimming has room to work. Free export has no watermark; see pricing.
Replace clips without breaking the timing
The key tool here is Replace. Tap a clip on the timeline so its editing options appear, then choose Replace to swap it for another clip while keeping the length. That means the template's rhythm stays intact.
- Match the action. Pick footage whose movement fits the length of the slot.
- Trim the replacement so the best moment lands inside the slot. See the trim, split and reorder tutorial.
- Mix photos and video only if the template looks good with both.
- Keep faces and text in frame. Check that the subject isn't cropped awkwardly.
Customise text, audio and timing
A template is a starting point, not a lock. Once your clips are in, make it yours:
- Edit the text. Change the wording, then adjust font and colour. See the text and titles tutorial.
- Change the music if the track doesn't suit your topic, using the music and audio tutorial.
- Add captions so viewers can follow on mute: captions tutorial.
- Soften or sharpen cuts with transitions.
- Finish the look with cinematic filters.
Change only two or three things. The more you rewrite, the less the template saves you.
Sync cuts to the beat
Many templates feel good because the cuts land on the music. If you change a clip's length or swap the song, you may lose that. Edits supports beat markers on the audio layer, so you can mark beats and line your cuts up with them.
- Play the track and add a marker on each strong beat.
- Trim or slide clips so each cut falls on a marker.
- Play it back and nudge any clip that feels off.

Build your own reusable format
Reviewers suggest reusing templates for recurring formats. If you post the same kind of video each week, treat one finished project as your own template:
- Build it once. Set up your intro, text style, music and length.
- Save it, or duplicate the project, so the structure is ready next time.
- Swap the footage each time with Replace and update the text.
- Keep a consistent look so your reels are recognisable in a feed.
Good formats to repeat: mini vlogs, food reels, product videos, travel reels.
Common template problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Can't find a template | Not saved, or the feed changed | Check Ideas for saved items, then browse Inspiration |
| Not enough clips | Template has more slots than footage | Choose a shorter template or reuse a clip with a different crop |
| Clip looks cropped | Footage doesn't match the frame | Reposition or pick footage shot in the same orientation |
| Cuts feel off the beat | Replaced clip length or new song | Add beat markers and align the cuts |
| Looks like everyone else's | Template used unchanged | Change the text, music and colour grade |
| Export looks soft | Low-resolution source footage | Use original files; see blurry export |
