A great travel reel makes people feel like they're there. This guide walks through editing one in Instagram's free Edits app: planning shots, choosing and trimming your best clips, cutting to the beat, adding transitions, putting place names on screen, giving everything a consistent colour look, and exporting at high quality. Edits exports have no watermark. Every step is animated, with video walkthroughs at the end.

Plan your travel reel

A travel reel works best with a simple shape: a hook, a run of your best moments, and an ending that lands. These are general creative suggestions, not Edits rules:

  • Open with your best shot, a view, a reveal or a movement, in the first second or two.
  • Mix shot types: wide scenes, close details, people, food and movement.
  • Pick one story: a day, a route, "3 stops in Lisbon", or a before-and-after.
  • Keep it tight. Short clips and quick pacing hold attention.

If you like to plan scenes, use storyboards, and save references in Creative Inspiration. New to Edits? Start with the first Reel guide.

02

Import and trim your best clips

Async's walkthrough describes the basic flow: tap +, select your clips, tap Add, and they appear in the editor. You can also record directly in the app. In the timeline you can split clips, move them along without changing their length, duplicate or replace shots, and delete footage you don't need.

  1. Import everything you like, then be ruthless.
  2. Trim each clip to its best 1 to 3 seconds, cutting shaky starts and slow ends.
  3. Order the clips so the energy builds and the best shot opens.
  4. Delete repeats. One great shot of a place beats three similar ones.

See trim, split and reorder for a closer look.

03

Cut to the beat and add audio

Music turns a clip montage into a reel. Async notes that Edits has beat markers that can snap cuts to the music, plus per-clip volume, fades, and layers for music, voiceovers and sound effects.

  1. Pick a track with a clear rhythm; see music and audio.
  2. Line cuts up with the beat so each new place lands on a hit.
  3. Add ambient sound such as waves, street noise or market chatter underneath.
  4. Try a short voiceover for the story; see the voiceover guide.
  5. Fade the end so the reel finishes cleanly; see advanced audio tools.

Check you're allowed to use the track on your account type.

04

Add transitions

Transitions make moving between places feel smooth. Primal Video's guide lists transitions such as camera pan and cinema-style zoom among Edits effects.

  • Match movement: end one clip with a pan and start the next with a pan the same way.
  • Use a zoom to jump to a new location.
  • Keep one style so it doesn't feel busy.
  • Use keyframes for custom zooms and drifts; see keyframes.

The full list is in the transitions guide.

05

Put places on screen with text and captions

Travel viewers want to know where you are. Async says Edits can generate automatic captions, or you can add them manually and adjust font, size, colour, placement and animation.

  1. Add a place name for each location, short and readable.
  2. Keep text in the safe area, away from edges and the buttons on screen.
  3. Use captions if there is speech; see captions.
  4. Style the text once and reuse it; see text and titles.
06

Give it a consistent look

Clips from different times of day can look mismatched. Apply the same filter or colour adjustments across the reel so it feels like one trip. Edits also lists filters and colour grading among its tools.

  • Pick one filter and apply it across clips.
  • Keep skies and skin natural, and don't over-saturate.
  • Try a film look; see cinematic filters, crop and blur.
  • Crop for vertical so landscapes fill the frame.
07

Export and post

Async says you can export in HD, 2K or 4K, with standard or high-quality compression, with no watermark, and post directly to Reels, Stories or Feed, cross-post to Facebook, or download the file. Edits product lead Tom Bender recommends 2K for most uses and the Share to Instagram button for best quality.

  1. Watch it through once with sound.
  2. Export in 2K, high quality.
  3. Share to Instagram and add a caption with place and hashtags.

Full details in the export guide.

Edits travel reel FAQ

Import your clips with the plus button, trim each to its best moments, cut to the beat of a music track, add transitions and place names, apply one consistent filter, then export in 2K and share to Instagram.

There is no official rule. A common approach is 1 to 3 seconds per clip for a fast, energetic travel reel.

Async's walkthrough says Edits has beat markers that can snap cuts to the music.

Add short text for each place name, and use captions if there is speech. Edits lets you adjust font, size, colour, placement and animation.

Edits product lead Tom Bender recommends 2K for most uses, and the Share to Instagram button for best quality.

No. Edits exports have no watermark. See the pricing page.
