Edits / Comparisons / Edits vs CapCut
The two apps most people edit Reels in, head to head. Edits is Instagram's own editor: free, no watermark, a teleprompter camera, Instagram's audio library and your Reels' Insights in the same app. CapCut is the incumbent: a huge template and effects library, a desktop app, and a subscription that keeps getting more expensive. Ten rounds, an honest score, who should pick which, and how to switch if you're switching.
If Instagram Reels are what you make, Edits wins, and not narrowly: it's free with a clean export, its camera is built for creators, the audio library is Instagram's own, and the Insights tab closes the loop CapCut can't. If you live in templates, edit on a desktop, run several accounts or post mostly to TikTok, CapCut is still the deeper tool - at a subscription price that has climbed.
Plenty of people run both: CapCut for a template-heavy edit, Edits for the clean export and posting. The switching notes cover that.
Scored for someone making short vertical video for Instagram. A YouTube editor would score rounds 4, 5 and 10 more heavily and might flip the result - which is the honest answer to "which is better": it depends what you make.
$0. No tiers, no watermark, no locked tools; optional in-app purchases listed but nothing in the editor is gated. Pricing
Free tier plus Pro at roughly $10–20/month or $90–180/year in the US depending on tier and store, and prices have risen sharply. Pro unlocks premium templates, Pro assets, 4K/60 export, cloud storage and AI credits.
None, ever. No logo, outro or end card at any resolution. Details
No mark on a plain project, but most templates end with a CapCut logo clip you must delete, and any project using Pro-only effects, filters or stock needs Pro to export clean.
Teleprompter, countdown, in-camera green screen, speed 0.3–3×, 4K/60 on supported phones. Built for talking to it. Camera tools
A capable camera with filters and effects, no teleprompter. Most CapCut users shoot in the phone camera and import.
Multi-track timeline, overlays, speed, reverse, keyframes, cutouts, Project Versions, snap alignment. Everything a Reel needs; fewer tracks than a desktop NLE.
Deeper: more tracks, masks, curves, chroma key controls, text-to-speech, auto-reframe, and a desktop timeline for complex projects. CapCut wins on sheer depth.
Trend templates, Storyboards, locked template clips. Good, curated, far fewer. Templates
The largest template library on mobile, searchable, one-tap, tied to trends. The reason many people installed CapCut in the first place - though many templates carry the outro or Pro assets.
Keyframes, 15 In & Out animations, Opacity Blending, 60+ effects, AI Restyle and generation (some countries, with limits). AI effects
A bigger effects catalogue and more AI tools (auto captions in many languages, text-to-speech, AI models, background removal), but the best of it sits behind Pro credits.
Auto captions, editable word by word, styles, highlighting, bilingual in 15 languages, automatic lyrics. Captions
Strong auto captions with many languages and styles; some caption templates and fonts are Pro. Roughly level on quality; Edits is free end to end.
Instagram's own library - trending, recommended, original - tagged on the Reel when you post from Edits. Volume ducking, voiceover, beat markers, your own imports. Trending audio
CapCut's library plus TikTok-adjacent sounds; posting to Instagram usually means re-adding the sound in the Instagram app for the audio tag. Good tools, extra step.
Reels Insights inside the editor: retention curve, non-follower share, 3-Reel comparison, audience data. Ideas tab for capture. Analytics
No analytics for your posted Reels - that lives in Instagram. Inspiration comes from the template feed.
Mobile only today; desktop announced, undated. One Instagram account at a time. Runs on PC/Mac via emulator or Apple silicon. Desktop guide
Windows, Mac and web editors, cloud sync between them, Teams plan with seats. The clear choice for a desk-based or multi-person workflow.

Note: CapCut's free tier, Pro pricing and which assets are Pro-only change often and differ by region - check the app before relying on a row. Our full take on Edits alone is in the review; other head-to-heads in Comparisons.
There's no project import between the apps, so switching is about files and habits, not migration.
Edits costs nothing and exports clean. If it does what you need, the subscription question answers itself.
