First: did the video actually export?
Check your camera roll before you change anything. A noobclaw guide on Edits export settings suggests this simple test: if the file is in your camera roll, the export worked and only the handoff to Instagram failed. If no file appears, the render itself failed.
- File is in your camera roll: the export is fine. Jump to sharing failed.
- No file: the render failed or stalled. Continue with the quick fixes.
- Export bar frozen: see stuck or slow.
Instagram's Help Center doesn't have a troubleshooting article for failed Edits exports, so the fixes on this page are practical checks drawn from that guide and general good practice, not official steps. If you haven't exported before, read the export guide first.
Quick fixes, in order
- Update Edits and Instagram. Open the App Store or Google Play and install both updates. Instagram's team is reported to ask users with export errors to update both apps before trying again.
- Restart the app, then your phone if it still fails. Your project should remain in your drafts.
- Step down the preset. Try 4K to 2K, or 2K to HD. Edits supports HD (1080x1920), 2K (1440x2560) and 4K (2160x3840), and Tom Bender recommends 2K for most uses, as reported by Social Media Today.
- Free up storage. Exporting or downloading saves a full video file to your phone, so low storage can stop it.
- Remove the last thing you added (a layer, effect or big clip) and export again to find the culprit.
- Keep the app open and your phone awake until the export finishes.
Change one thing at a time so you know what fixed it.
Stuck at a percentage or very slow
Long, heavy projects take longer to render, and Bender notes 4K is slower to process than 2K. If the bar stops at, say, 50 percent:
- Wait a few minutes first; heavy effects can pause progress.
- Lower the preset or the frame rate (24 or 30 fps instead of 60).
- Simplify: remove extra layers, big overlays, stacked effects or very high-resolution clips.
- Export in parts: split a long project in two and export each half.
- Close other apps to free memory.
Shooting settings matter too; see camera tools for resolution and frame rate choices.
Missing 2K or 4K options
The noobclaw guide says to update Edits and check the resolution control inside the project as well as on the camera, and notes that a phone's own camera may limit the 4K option. Availability can depend on your device.
- Update Edits to the latest version.
- Check both places: camera settings and project export settings.
- Use 2K or HD if 4K isn't offered; 2K is the recommended choice for most uses anyway.
Posted video looks soft
If the export worked but the posted video looks soft, the cause is usually upload compression, not a failed export. The same guide suggests turning on Instagram's Upload at highest quality under Profile, Menu, Your app and media, Media quality, noting that these uploads may take longer.
- Export at 2K, high quality and use Share to Instagram.
- Avoid re-exporting an already exported file.
Full steps: blurry export fixes. Edits you make after exporting don't change the posted video; re-export to apply them.
Still failing? Protect your work and report it
- Duplicate your project before experimenting, so the original stays untouched.
- Don't delete or reinstall the app yet. Reinstalling can lose drafts that aren't backed up; see missing drafts.
- Note the details: phone model, app versions, preset, project length and the percentage where it stopped.
- Report it. Instagram's team has been reported to ask users to shake the phone to file a bug report from inside the app.

A 60-second checklist
| Symptom | Try this first |
|---|---|
| "Export failed" message | Update both apps, then lower the preset |
| Bar frozen mid-way | Wait, then remove layers or export at 2K or HD |
| Very slow export | Use 2K at 30 fps and close other apps |
| File saved but not posted | Upload the saved file in Instagram |
| No 4K option | Update Edits and use 2K |
| Soft after posting | Turn on Upload at highest quality |
Edits export problems FAQ
Common causes are an outdated app, low storage, a preset that is too heavy for your phone, or a very complex project. Update Edits and Instagram, free storage, step down from 4K to 2K or HD, and remove the last layer you added.
Check your camera roll. If the file is there, the export worked and only sharing to Instagram failed. If not, the render failed.
Heavy projects take longer, and 4K is slower than 2K. Wait a few minutes, then lower the preset, simplify the project or export in parts.
2K is recommended by Edits product lead Tom Bender for most uses. If it still fails, try HD (1080x1920).
Update Edits and check both the camera and project export settings. A phone's own camera may limit 4K.
Your project normally stays in your drafts, but duplicate it before experimenting and avoid reinstalling the app until you've checked missing drafts.
Instagram's team has been reported to ask users to shake the phone to file a bug report in the app. Check your version for the option.
