What a product video needs
A strong product video answers three questions fast: what is it, why should I care, and what do I do next. These are general suggestions, not Edits rules:
- Hook in 2 seconds. Show the product in action or its best feature first.
- One benefit per video. Keep the message simple.
- Show, don't tell. Use close-ups, use cases and before-and-after.
- End with a clear next step: shop, comment, save or follow.

Film the product well
Good footage makes editing easier. Edits product lead Tom Bender recommends shooting and exporting at 2K for most uses, and says to test frame rate and HDR in the Edits camera (as reported by Social Media Today).
- Use soft, even light, near a window if you can.
- Keep the background simple so the product stands out.
- Film steady, on a tripod or a stack of books, using the camera timer.
- Shoot close-ups, wide shots and hands using the product.
- Record in short clips so you can discard bad takes.

Cut out the product for depth
Instagram's cinematic tutorial shows how to separate a subject from its background: select the Cutouts feature and let Edits process the separation, then blur the bottom layer with Effects > Blur. The same idea makes a product pop.
- Select the clip and choose Cutouts.
- Wait for processing and check the edges.
- Blur or restyle the background layer so the product stands out.
- Try a bold colour or green screen background that matches your brand.
See cinematic filters, crop and blur for the full steps. Cutout accuracy on small or shiny products isn't documented, so check every result.
Tag products with effects
Instagram's effects tutorial demonstrates the Tag effect, which helps viewers see which companies, brands or products appear in your video.
- Open your video in an edit.
- Select Effects in the bottom navigation bar.
- Choose Tag.
- Tap the product in the video and type its name.
The tutorial doesn't say whether a tag follows the product as it moves, so check on playback. See effects in one tap. This is an on-video label, separate from Instagram's shopping product tags, which you add when you post.
Add text, price and a call to action
Text turns a pretty video into a selling one.
- Name and benefit in the first seconds, in short lines.
- Price or offer if it helps, such as "Free shipping".
- Call to action at the end: "Shop in bio", "Save for later" or "Comment 'link'".
- Keep text readable and inside the safe area.
- Add captions for any speech.
See text and titles and captions. Follow any advertising disclosure rules that apply to you.
Templates and music
Templates give you a ready structure; Primal Video's guide describes tapping Use template in the Inspiration area to build around a style. Add music for pace.
- Template: drop your clips into a tested structure; see templates.
- Music: choose a track that fits the brand; see music and audio.
- Cuts: land each new angle on a beat.
- Voiceover: add a short explanation; see voiceover.
Make sure you have the rights to the music, especially for business accounts.
Export and post
Edits exports have no watermark. Bender recommends exporting in 2K and using the Share to Instagram button, which he says helps viewers see a higher-quality version.
- Watch it once with sound off to check the text carries the message.
- Export in 2K, high quality.
- Share to Instagram, add your caption, product tags and hashtags.
See the export guide.
Common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cutout edges look rough | Busy or similar-coloured background | Re-film on a plain background |
| Product looks dull | Low light | Film near a window or add a soft light |
| Tag in the wrong spot | Wrong tap | Delete and tap the product again |
| Text hard to read | Low contrast | Bolder font or a background bar |
| Blurry after posting | Compression | See blurry export |
| Export fails | Heavy project | See export failed |
