Before you start: app, account and a simple idea

Getting set up takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Download Edits from the App Store or Google Play by searching for Instagram Edits. See the Android and iPhone guide, or the getting started guide.
  2. Log in with your Instagram account. You don't need a new profile. Having trouble? See login problems.
  3. Pick one simple idea. A first Reel works best at 15 to 30 seconds, with one message: a day in your life, a tip, a recipe or a product shot.
  4. Gather or film 5 to 8 short clips. Short clips are easier to cut together than one long take.

If you want a plan, jot a hook, two or three middle shots and an ending with storyboards. Edits is free with no watermark on downloads; see pricing. Menu names and icons change between versions, so follow what your own screen shows.

02

Start a project and add clips

Reviews describe the app's main areas as Ideas (saved notes and templates), Inspiration (suggested styles), Projects (your edits and drafts) and the in-app Camera.

  1. Open Projects and tap + to start a new project.
  2. Choose how to add footage. Pick clips from your gallery, or record inside the app. Reports say you can record up to 10 minutes.
  3. Record several short clips instead of one long one. You can throw away weak takes without losing the rest.
  4. Put your clips on the timeline in the order you want to show them.

Want a ready-made structure instead? Try templates. Reading from a script? Use the teleprompter.

03

Trim and arrange your clips

Tight clips make a Reel feel professional. A good rule is to cut the first and last half-second of each clip.

  • Tap a clip to highlight it and drag the handles to tighten the start and end.
  • Use Split to cut a clip at a chosen point, and Delete to remove the part you don't need.
  • Pinch to zoom the timeline for precision.
  • Tap and hold a clip to reorder it.
  • Open with your best shot. The first two seconds decide whether people keep watching.

The full guide is the trim, split and reorder tutorial.

04

Add music and sound

  1. Deselect everything, then tap Audio to add music or sounds from Instagram, including audio you've saved.
  2. Trim and move the track so the beat lines up with your cuts.
  3. Lower the music if anyone is speaking. Reviews mention a volume ducking option that lowers music while someone talks.
  4. Add sound effects with Sound FX, or record your voice with Voice.

Keep music below your voice. Guides: music and audio, voiceover and audio problems.

05

Add text and captions

Text: with nothing selected, tap Text and type a title. Drag, resize or rotate it, and save a style as a preset to reuse. See text and titles.

Captions: many people watch on mute, so add captions.

  1. With nothing selected, tap Captions and choose to add them automatically.
  2. Read through and fix any misheard words.
  3. Delete any odd phrases the detector picked up.
  4. Check that captions don't cover faces or titles.

If something goes wrong, see the captions tutorial and captions not working.

06

Polish the look (without overdoing it)

Once the basics work, add one or two finishing touches:

Less is more. A clean Reel with strong clips beats one packed with effects.

07

Export and post

  1. Play the whole project from start to finish, with sound on.
  2. Set your resolution and frame rate to match how you filmed. Reports describe export up to 4K, watermark-free, with the video saved to your camera roll.
  3. Wait for it to render, keeping the app open.
  4. Post directly to Instagram or Facebook, or download the file to post elsewhere.
  5. Write a short caption and cover, then share.

The details are in the export and save guide. If export fails, see export failed, and for soft quality blurry export.
