Free Edits download: the 30-second answer
Edits is free to download from Google Play and the App Store, and every feature inside it - editing, captions, music, AI tools, insights and unlimited 4K export - is free too, with no subscription, no trial and no watermark. Search "Edits, an Instagram app", confirm the developer is Instagram, tap Install, and sign in with your Instagram account. You will never be asked for a card.
If that sounds too simple, it's because most "free video editor" results have trained you to expect a catch at the export screen. This page exists to show you there isn't one - and to help you dodge the paid clones and "Pro" bundles that have grown up around the search phrase. We'll go through precisely what the free app includes, the one honest caveat Meta has stated about future AI features, download links for every platform, a year's cost comparison against the usual suspects, and fixes for the handful of download hiccups people actually hit.
Is the Edits app really free?
Yes - in the strict sense most apps fail. Here is the definition we're using, and how Edits measures against it:
| "Free" test | Typical "free" editor | Edits |
|---|---|---|
| Free to download | Usually | Yes |
| Free to export | Watermark, or HD behind paywall | Unlimited, up to 4K, clean |
| No trial timer | 3-7 day "Pro trial" that auto-bills | No trial exists |
| All tools included | Best effects, fonts, AI locked | Every tool, every effect |
| No ads | Ads, or "watch ad to remove watermark" | No ads |
| No in-app purchases for core use | Pro at $5-15 / month | No Pro tier |
| Price | $0 up front, $60-180 / year in practice | $0, full stop |
The reason is structural rather than generous. Instagram built Edits so that creators make better Reels and post them; charging for the editor or stamping the output would work against the only thing Meta wants from it. "Free" is the product strategy, not a promotion with an end date. That's also why the free tier hasn't eroded - in its first year Edits only added features to the free app, roughly weekly, while several competitors moved features the other way.
What the free Edits app includes
Everything. But "everything" is a lazy answer, so here's the inventory grouped the way you'll use it.
Capture
- In-app camera with takes up to 10 minutes, control over resolution, frame rate and dynamic range
- Teleprompter under the front camera with adjustable speed and size
- Multiple takes, clip preview, and Cut Silences to strip dead air automatically
Timeline
- Frame-accurate editing: pinch-zoom to single frames, split, trim, reorder, clip lock
- Speed up to 10×, freeze frames, reverse, beat markers
- Keyframes on position, rotation, scale and opacity for clips, text, stickers and cutouts
Captions, text and audio
- One-tap auto captions with find & replace, per-word styling, highlights and animation
- Auto-translation into 15+ languages; safe-zone guides for Instagram's UI
- Royalty-free music, 200+ sound effects, imported audio, Loudness Match, voice effects
AI, effects and publishing
- Cutouts, green screen, Restyle, image animation and rolling AI video tools
- Transitions, filters, cinematic looks, manual colour, dozens of effects
- Projects that stay editable forever, sharing to collaborators, direct publishing to Instagram and Facebook
Export
- Unlimited exports, up to 4K, no watermark, no daily cap, no "HD is premium"
For a deeper tour of each tool, see the Edits features guide.
The honest fine print
A page about "free" that hides the caveats isn't worth trusting, so here are all of them.
- You need an Instagram account. Edits signs in with Instagram - personal, creator or business. That's the "payment": you're using Meta's ecosystem, and the Insights tab is deepest for content posted to Instagram.
- Future advanced AI may be paid. Meta has said that while core editing will remain free, some future frontier AI features could sit behind a paid tier. Nothing currently in the app is paywalled, and no such tier exists today.
- Meta's data policies apply. Same as using Instagram itself - worth knowing, not unique to Edits.
- Audio licensing is separate from the app being free. A clean export doesn't license the music in it. Use the royalty-free category or your own tracks for commercial work.
That's the complete list. No export credits, no trial countdown, no watermark toggle buried in a settings menu.

Avoiding paid fakes and "Edits Pro" clones
Because the real Edits is free, the only way anyone makes money from the search phrase is by selling you something that isn't Edits. Three patterns to recognise:
1. Paid apps with a similar name
Both stores list several unrelated apps called "Edits", "Edit", "Edits Pro" or "Video Edits". Some charge up front; more charge a weekly subscription after a short trial. None are from Instagram. The developer line is the test - it must read Instagram on Google Play or Instagram, Inc. on the App Store, and the full listing name is "Edits, an Instagram app".
2. "Free download" sites that charge for the file
Websites offering "Edits free download" behind a survey, a "premium downloader", or a "small verification fee" are selling you a file that is free from the official stores. Close the tab.
3. "Pro / unlocked / no watermark" mods
There's no Pro tier to unlock and no watermark to remove, so a "mod" can't add anything - it can only replace Instagram's signature with a stranger's and route your login through code nobody audited. The APK guide explains why this is a scam by definition.
What "free" saves you over a year
The subscription model most editors use looks cheap per month and adds up fast. Typical published prices for watermark removal or "Pro" access run from around $5 to $15 a month, billed continuously - stop paying and the watermark returns on every future export. Over a year of regular posting that's roughly:
The comparison isn't entirely apples to apples - some paid editors have deeper template libraries or desktop versions - but on the specific thing most people are paying for, a clean export without a logo in the corner, Edits delivers it for nothing. For a feature-by-feature view see Edits vs CapCut, Edits vs InShot and the rest of the comparisons.
Why Instagram gives Edits away
Understanding the incentive is the best way to trust that "free" will last. Instagram could see in its own data that a large share of top-performing Reels were being made in third-party editors and then uploaded. Every one of those editors was a place creators might be nudged toward a rival platform, and every watermark was a rival's logo inside Instagram's feed. Building the editor, giving it away and wiring it directly into Reels publishing and analytics solves all of that at once.
So Meta's return on Edits isn't your subscription - it's more and better Reels on Instagram and Facebook. That's why the free app has only gained features, why there's no watermark, and why the one caveat Meta has voiced is about future advanced AI (which is expensive to run) rather than about editing, captions or export. When an app's business model is aligned with you making good videos, the free tier doesn't erode underneath you.
Account, sign-in and what you're agreeing to
There's no Edits account and no checkout. On first launch you sign in with Instagram - one tap if the Instagram app is already on your phone, or username and password if not. Personal, creator and business accounts all work; use the one you post from, because the Insights tab and direct publishing are tied to it.
Permissions are requested per feature as you use them: Photos when you first import, Camera and Microphone when you first record. None of them are conditions of "free" - decline one and the app still works, you just lose that feature until you grant it in Settings. Usage is covered by Meta's standard terms and data policy, the same ones that govern Instagram.
Your first free, watermark-free export
- Install and sign in from the links in section five.
- Tap + in Projects and import a few clips or record one with the in-app camera.
- Cut on the timeline - trim, split, reorder.
- Tap Captions, fix any misheard words, highlight a key phrase.
- Add a royalty-free track if the video is for a brand or client.
- Export at the highest resolution offered. Look at the corner of the video: nothing there.

Free download problems? Quick fixes
The store shows a price or a subscription
You're on a look-alike. Go back and search the full name "Edits, an Instagram app" and check the developer.
"Not available in your country"
Edits rolled out by region and a few markets still lag. On Android, the genuine APK is free from APKMirror or APKPure - see the APK guide. On iPhone, update iOS and search again; if it's still missing, it hasn't reached your App Store region yet.
App Store asks for Face ID / password
Apple requires confirmation for every download, free or paid. Nothing is charged.
Install button greyed out
Your OS version is below the minimum. Update if an update is available.
Asked to pay inside the app
The genuine Edits never shows a paywall for its current features. If you see one, check the developer in your store's "installed apps" list - you likely installed a clone.
