Which audio problem do you have?
Name the problem first, because each one has a different fix. Instagram's tutorial describes Edits audio tools as Import, Enhance and Fade, and reviewers add per-clip volume, muting, layers for music, voiceovers and sound effects, and beat markers. Problems usually come from one of those controls, from phone playback, or from the export.
| What you hear | Likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| No sound at all | Phone volume or silent mode, muted clip, or a muted track | No sound |
| Music missing or quiet | Track not placed, volume low, or voice louder | Music |
| Voiceover is late or off | Recording delay or placement | Voiceover |
| Audio drifts from the picture | Edits made after placing audio | Out of sync |
| Sound gone after export | Muted layer or playback issue | After export |
| Noisy or distorted | Background noise or levels too high | Noisy audio |
The steps are practical checks, not official Instagram troubleshooting, which doesn't cover these cases. New to audio? Read music and audio first.
No sound at all
Start with the simple things, because most "no sound" problems are playback settings.
- Turn up your phone's media volume and check silent or Do Not Disturb modes.
- Unplug or disconnect headphones and Bluetooth devices, which can route sound elsewhere.
- Check the clip volume in Edits. A clip set to zero or muted plays silently.
- Check the audio layers: a music or voiceover track may be muted or moved off the timeline.
- Play another video on your phone to confirm the speakers work.
- Restart the app if sound still doesn't play in the editor.
If the original clip itself has no sound, the recording may have been muted; test a fresh clip in the Edits camera.
Music missing or too quiet
- Check the track is on the timeline and overlaps the part of the video you're listening to.
- Raise the music volume, or lower the clip's original sound if it's drowning the track.
- Imported audio: Instagram's Import tool brings music, voiceovers and effects from your device. If a file won't play, try re-exporting it as MP3 or M4A.
- Check rights and availability. Some library tracks aren't available on every account or platform, so a track may be muted or restricted.
- Balance voice and music: keep music well under speech.

Voiceover problems
Voiceovers recorded in the app are placed on the timeline. If one sounds late, quiet or off:
- Record with the phone's own microphone or wired earphones. Bluetooth headphones can add delay when recording or monitoring, which is general phone behaviour.
- Record in a quiet room, close to the mic.
- Place the voiceover exactly where the line should start and check it on playback.
- Re-record the line rather than stretching it.
- Clean it up with Enhance, which Instagram says reduces background noise and makes voices clearer.

Audio out of sync
Drift usually appears after you change the picture without moving the audio, such as trims, speed changes or deleted gaps.
- Finish the picture edit first, then place music and voiceover.
- Find the first moment where the sound and picture disagree.
- Slide the audio so the key sound lines up with the visual action, such as a clap or a mouth movement.
- Check speed changes: a slowed or sped-up clip changes how its original audio plays.
- Use beat markers so cuts land on music hits; see transitions.
- Play the whole video after every later cut.
See trim, split and reorder for timeline tools.
Sound missing after export or posting
- Play the saved file in your phone's normal player. If it has sound there, the export is fine.
- If the file is silent, check for muted clips or layers in the project and export again.
- If the file has sound but the post is silent, check that Instagram isn't muted and that the post's audio isn't set to off or restricted.
- Try sharing again or upload the saved file manually.
Edits changes made after exporting don't change the posted video, so re-export after any fix. If the export fails, see export failed or stuck, and for posting elsewhere, multi-platform videos.
Noisy, muffled or distorted audio
- Try Enhance: Instagram describes it as reducing background noise, evening out volume and making voices clearer.
- Lower levels if the sound crackles or distorts; clipping can't be fixed after the fact.
- Re-record closer to the mic and away from wind, fans and traffic.
- Cover the lens and mic area with clean hands; a blocked mic sounds muffled.
- Add a fade where a clip ends so the audio doesn't cut abruptly.
Protect your work and escalate
- Duplicate your project before big changes.
- Don't delete or reinstall the app to fix audio; see missing drafts.
- Update Edits and Instagram, then restart.
- Test with a fresh clip in the Edits camera to see if the problem is the project or the app.
- Note the details for a report: phone model, OS version, Edits version, where it fails and whether the saved file has sound.

Edits audio problems FAQ
Check your phone volume and silent mode, disconnect Bluetooth devices, and make sure the clip volume isn't zero and no audio layer is muted. Then play the saved file in your normal video player.
The track may not overlap the part you're playing, its volume may be low, or the clip's original audio may be louder. Raise the music or lower the clip sound, and check that the track is available on your account.
Bluetooth headphones can add delay when recording or monitoring. Record with the phone's mic or wired earphones, place the voiceover where the line should start, and re-record if needed.
Drift usually appears after trims, speed changes or deleted gaps made after placing audio. Finish the picture edit first, then line the sound up with a visible cue.
Instagram says Enhance reduces background noise, evens out volume and makes voices clearer in one step.
Play the saved file first. If it has sound, check that Instagram isn't muted and try sharing again or uploading the saved file manually.
