Edits / Comparisons / Edits vs Canva
Lots of creators already live in Canva, so "can't I just make my Reels there too?" is a fair question. Canva is a design suite with a video mode: thousands of templates, a brand kit, team libraries, a scheduler, and a timeline that is fine for slides-with-motion. Edits is Instagram's video editor: a real multi-track timeline with keyframes, one-tap captions, a tagged audio library, a camera with a teleprompter, and your Reels' Insights - free, no watermark. Ten rounds, an honest score, who should pick which, and the workflow that uses both.
If the Reel is footage - you talking, you showing, you moving - edit it in Edits. It's free, exports clean, has a timeline that actually layers video, captions and music in a tap, a camera that films it and the numbers afterwards. If the Reel is design - a quote card that animates, a carousel-style promo, a branded announcement with your fonts and colours applied by a team - that's Canva, and it's very good at it. Three rounds go to Canva clearly; six are Edits' because the video itself is most of a Reel.
The common setup: design in Canva, edit in Edits - the run-both section shows how.
Scored for a creator making Reels from footage. A social media manager running a brand account with a team would weight rounds 4, 8 and 9 far more heavily - and could reasonably call it for Canva. It depends what you're making, and with whom.
Free, no tiers, no watermark. Optional in-app purchases listed; nothing in the editor is gated. Pricing
Free plan is usable; the templates, stock, brand kit, background remover and most AI are Pro - roughly $15–18/month in the US, about $180/year, more per person for teams. Varies by region.
None, ever. No-watermark export
No global watermark on free exports - but any Pro element you used stays watermarked until you pay or swap it out. Easy to trip over.
Multi-track: clips, overlays, text, audio, SFX on separate tracks; trim, split, speed; keyframes for position, scale, rotation, opacity. Keyframes
Page-based with a simple timeline: trim, split, transitions between pages, preset element animations. No keyframes, limited layering of moving video.
Curated Reel templates, text styles, fonts, stickers. Good, not vast. Templates
Hundreds of thousands of templates, every font, a stock library, brand colours applied in one click. This is what Canva is.
Auto captions in one tap, styled, bilingual in 15 languages, automatic lyrics. Auto captions
Captions exist, but they're Pro-tier, more limited in styling and placement, and slower to correct.
Instagram's tagged library, import, Enhance, ducking, loudness match, beat markers. Music & audio
Royalty-free audio library (much of it Pro), volume and fade. No Instagram tagging, no one-tap cleanup, no ducking.
Built-in camera: HD→4K, 24–60 fps, 10-minute takes, teleprompter, timer, green screen. Camera tools
A "record yourself" presenter mode on desktop; no real camera tools. You import footage.
Project Versions and templates for yourself; no shared brand kit or team library.
Brand Kit, shared folders, comments, approvals, team templates. If three people touch a post before it goes out, Canva wins this outright.
iPhone and Android; desktop announced, in testing. Desktop guide
Browser, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android - edit the same file anywhere, today.
Share straight to Reels with the audio tag; Insights - retention curves, comparisons - in the editor.
Content Planner schedules posts to Instagram (Pro); no retention analytics in the editor.
