Edits costs nothing: no subscription, no in-app purchases, no "Pro" tier, no paid export and no watermark to buy your way out of. Every feature in the app - camera, captions, keyframes, AI effects, Insights - is included on iPhone and Android. The limits that do exist are technical or regional, not paywalls, and Instagram has hinted that premium features may come later. All of it, explained.
Instagram built Edits to compete with CapCut, and the way it competes is price. The app is free to download from the App Store and Google Play, there are no in-app purchases listed, no "Pro" or "Premium" tier, no ads, and exports are clean at every resolution - the thing most rivals charge a monthly fee for.
Everything shipped in the app's monthly updates - 130+ features in the first year - has landed free. Instagram's Adam Mosseri has said future versions might include premium features; see what's actually been said. Today, nothing in Edits asks for money.

"Free" apps usually mean "free until the thing you need". Edits has limits, but every one is technical (your phone, the format), regional (where Instagram has licensed or launched something) or account-based (Instagram's own rules). There is no limit in Edits that paying would remove, because there's nothing to pay.
Long enough for a full tutorial. Reels over 3 minutes aren't recommended to non-followers anyway - length limits.
1080p works on everything we've tried. 4K depends on the device's camera and chip, not on paying.
AI Restyle and generation may not appear in your region, and where they do there's a cap on generations. No payment changes this. Availability.
Android follows over weeks. The 15 In & Out effects and 15-minute export shipped this way. Updates.
Business accounts get the royalty-free library instead - an Instagram licensing rule, not an Edits tier. Details.
No account switcher yet; drafts share by DM only. The limit that hurts managers most. Review.

Announced, undated. PC and Mac work through emulators or Apple silicon - also free. Desktop guide.
At launch, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said Edits would be free and that the team might add premium features in future versions. That's the whole statement: no feature list, no date, no price. Since then every monthly drop - AI Restyle, 15-minute exports, bilingual captions, the analytics upgrade - has shipped free.
Our read: if a paid tier arrives, it's most likely to cover heavier AI generation, cloud storage or team features - the things that cost Instagram money per use - rather than the core editor or the clean export. We'll update this page and the updates log the day anything changes. Nothing on this page is a promise about pricing; it's what's true today.
What the free tiers of popular mobile editors actually include, and what sits behind a subscription. For Reels creators the saving isn't "a cheaper plan" - it's the whole plan.

Note: other apps change prices and free tiers often and by region - treat their columns as "typically" and check in the store. Edits' column is the stable one: $0, nothing locked. More in Comparisons and CapCut alternatives.

Varies by app, region and monthly vs annual billing. Usually buys watermark removal, effects and cloud.
