Edits / Comparisons / Edits vs GoPro Quik
GoPro Quik is the app that makes GoPro footage usable: it controls the camera, pulls clips off it, and its party trick is auto-edit - pick a theme and a song and it cuts a beat-synced highlight for you. It works with any phone footage, but the extras (cloud backup, more filters and music, multi-speed) sit behind a subscription. Edits is Instagram's Reels editor: free, a multi-track timeline with keyframes, one-tap captions, tagged audio, AI effects and Insights. Ten rounds, an honest score, who should pick which - and the workflow GoPro owners actually want: Quik for the first cut, Edits for the finish.
Quik is genuinely good at a job Edits doesn't attempt: you hand it forty GoPro clips and a song and it returns a beat-synced first cut, and it controls and imports from the camera. But a Reel needs more than a highlight reel - captions, a tagged track, overlays, keyframes, a clean free export and some data on what worked - and that's Edits. Three rounds to Quik (auto-edit, GoPro footage, desktop), one tie on music, six to Edits.
If you shoot GoPro, don't choose: the run-both section is the workflow.
Scored for a creator making Reels. An action-sports shooter who never captions anything and just wants a good highlight on their phone by dinner could score rounds 3, 7 and 9 higher and call it for Quik - fair, and the honest answer for that person.
Free, no tiers. Optional in-app purchases listed; nothing in the editor is gated. Pricing
Free to download; a Quik subscription (about $10/year at last announcement) unlocks more filters, themes and music, and GoPro's own Premium plans bundle it. Plan names and prices change - check the store.
Nothing held back: no watermark, 4K export, captions, AI effects all free. No-watermark export
Basic editing is free; multi-speed, extra filters, more music and cloud backup are subscriber features. Fine for a trim, limiting for a styled edit.
Templates and Ideas help you start, but you assemble the cut yourself. Templates
The signature feature: pick clips, a theme and a song and Quik cuts a beat-synced highlight, trimming to the good bits. Basic output, but it saves an hour.
Multi-track: clips, overlays, text, audio, SFX; keyframes for position, scale, rotation, opacity; Project Versions. Keyframes
Trim, crop, filters, text, speed and stills - a lighter timeline aimed at highlights. No keyframes or real overlays.
Auto captions in one tap, styled, bilingual in 15 languages. Auto captions
Text you add by hand. We found no speech-to-text - not what it's built for.
Instagram's tagged library, import, Enhance, ducking, loudness match, beat markers. Music & audio
Hundreds of original and royalty-free tracks, cuts auto-synced to the beat - but nothing tagged on Instagram, no voice cleanup.
Films with your phone: HD→4K, 60 fps, teleprompter, timer, green screen. Camera tools GoPro clips import like any video.
Remote-controls the GoPro (live preview, settings), pulls clips off wirelessly, auto-uploads to the cloud for subscribers. Unmatched if the footage comes from a GoPro.
Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Camera, Insights - retention curves next to the timeline, share with the audio tag.
Share to social apps from the app; Mural is a private highlight feed. No Instagram audio tag, no analytics.
iPhone and Android; desktop announced, in testing. Desktop guide
iOS and Android, plus Quik for Mac (free to GoPro subscribers, synced projects) and a Windows version announced afterwards.
Dozens of effects, In & Out, Opacity blending, AI effects (Animate, Restyle, Cutouts), Enhance. AI effects
Themes, filters tuned for snow and water, speed ramps, frame grabs. Good for action footage; no generative AI.

Note: GoPro has reshuffled Quik's plans and its desktop rollout more than once; check the app store and GoPro's site for the current tiers and platforms. Our full take on Edits alone is in the review; the CapCut comparison is here; all head-to-heads in Comparisons.
The GoPro-owner workflow: let Quik do the boring part - ingest and pick - then finish where captions, audio tags and posting live.
Edits is free, exports clean, and does captions, audio and posting in the same app.
