Edits / Comparisons / Edits vs iMovie
Both are free, both export clean, so this one isn't about money. iMovie is Apple's beginner-friendly editor for iPhone, iPad and Mac: Magic Movie builds an edit for you, Storyboards walk you through a shot list, trailers, green screen, Cinematic-mode focus editing, 4K and ProRes - on Apple devices only. Edits is Instagram's Reels editor: a multi-track timeline with keyframes, one-tap captions, tagged audio, AI effects and Insights, on iPhone and Android. Ten rounds, an honest score, who should pick which - and how to use both.
With both free and clean, the decision is what you're making and what you own. iMovie is brilliant at guided, beginner-friendly movies - Magic Movie, Storyboards, trailers, Cinematic-mode focus edits, and a real Mac app. But for Reels it stops short: no one-tap captions we could confirm, no Instagram-tagged audio, no keyframes, no analytics, and no Android. Edits has all of that. Three rounds to iMovie (guided edits, Cinematic mode, desktop and ecosystem), one tie on price, six to Edits.
Apple-device owners often use both - the run-both section shows the handoff.
Scored for a creator making Reels. A parent cutting a birthday movie, a teacher with a ClassKit assignment or a Mac user editing a 4K travel film would weight rounds 3, 7 and 8 up and could call it for iMovie - and be right.
Free, no watermark, 4K included. Optional in-app purchases listed; nothing in the editor is gated. Pricing
Free, no watermark, on every Apple device. Nothing to unlock.
iPhone and Android; desktop announced and in testing. Desktop guide
Apple only: iPhone, iPad, Mac. No Android, no Windows - if you or your collaborators use anything else, that's the end of it.
Templates and the Ideas tab help you start; you assemble the cut yourself. Templates
Magic Movie builds a styled edit from your clips (20+ styles), Storyboards give a shot list for genres like product reviews and cooking, plus Hollywood-style trailers. Genuinely good for beginners.
Multi-track: clips, overlays, text, audio, SFX; keyframes for position, scale, rotation, opacity; Project Versions. Keyframes
A clean trim-and-arrange timeline with picture-in-picture, split screen, speed and green screen. No general keyframes we could find beyond crop moves.
Auto captions in one tap, styled, bilingual in 15 languages. Auto captions
Titles you type and place by hand. We could not confirm one-tap speech-to-text.
Instagram's tagged library, import, Enhance, ducking, loudness match, beat markers. Music & audio
100+ soundtracks that auto-fit your movie's length, sound effects, voiceover, fades. Nice - but none tagged on Instagram, no voice cleanup.
Built-in camera: HD→4K, 60 fps, 10-minute takes, teleprompter, timer, green screen. Camera tools
No capture tools, but it's the editor for iPhone Cinematic mode clips - change the focus point and depth of field after the fact. Unique.
Mobile today. Share-to-Instagram is built in; nothing like iCloud project handoff.
iMovie for Mac, projects move between iPhone, iPad and Mac by AirDrop or iCloud, ProRes import, 4K, open in Final Cut Pro. The best free Apple-ecosystem editor.
Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Camera, Insights - retention curves next to the timeline; share with the audio tag.
Exports to Photos or uploads in 4K to Instagram or YouTube. No audio tag, no analytics, no drafts-to-insights loop.
Dozens of effects, In & Out, Opacity blending, AI effects (Animate, Restyle, Cutouts), Enhance. AI effects
13 filters with adjustable intensity, transitions, green screen, slow motion. Tasteful and limited; no generative AI.

For Apple creators: let iMovie's guided tools and Cinematic mode do what only they can, then finish where captions, audio tags and posting live.
