Edits download for PC: the 30-second answer

There is no Edits installer for Windows. To use Edits on a PC, install a free Android emulator (BlueStacks or LDPlayer), sign in to Google Play inside it, install "Edits, an Instagram app" from the Play Store, and sign in with your Instagram account. Everything works - timeline, keyframes, captions, AI tools, Insights, 4K export with no watermark - because it's the genuine Android app running in a window.

Two things to know up front. First, anything calling itself "Edits for PC.exe" or "Edits Windows setup" is not from Instagram and should be treated as malware. Second, Meta has confirmed a real desktop version is in development; this page will tell you when it ships. Until then, the emulator route is the honest answer, and for caption-heavy or long projects the big screen and real keyboard make it a better editing experience than a phone. The sections below take you from an empty PC to an exported video, including the BIOS setting that stops most emulators from starting.

02

Is there an Edits app for Windows?

Not yet. Edits launched on iOS and Android, and Apple silicon Macs can run the iOS build natively (see the Mac guide). Windows has no equivalent: Microsoft's own bridge for Android apps, Windows Subsystem for Android, was discontinued in 2025, and Google Play Games on PC carries a curated games-only catalogue that doesn't include Edits.

That leaves third-party Android emulators - mature, free, and widely used - as the working route. Meta has said a desktop version of Edits is coming, which is the only reason to expect this page to change. Until it does, treat the emulator method as the official-app-on-unofficial-plumbing solution it is: the app is real and signed by Instagram; only the device underneath is virtual.

PC requirements for Edits via emulator

Emulators add overhead, and Edits renders real 4K timelines, so the bar is a little higher than for the phone app. Most laptops and desktops from the last five years clear it.

ComponentMinimumComfortable for 4K
WindowsWindows 10 64-bitWindows 11
CPUIntel or AMD, 4 cores, virtualization (VT-x / AMD-V) enabled6+ cores, recent generation
RAM8 GB16 GB (give the emulator 4-6 GB)
Storage10 GB free on an SSDSSD with 20+ GB for footage and exports
GPUAny with current driversDedicated GPU (NVIDIA / AMD) or recent Intel Iris / Arc
AccountsA Google account (for the Play Store inside the emulator) and an Instagram account (for Edits)
Virtualization is the one that trips people. Open Task Manager → Performance → CPU and look for "Virtualization: Enabled". If it says Disabled, restart into BIOS/UEFI (usually Del, F2 or F10 at boot) and enable Intel VT-x or AMD SVM. Without it, emulators either refuse to start or crawl.
05

Which Android emulator to use for Edits

Edits needs two things from an emulator: a reasonably modern Android version and ARM translation, because the app ships ARM-native code. Both mainstream free emulators provide them.

EmulatorAndroid versionARM supportNotes
BlueStacks 5Android 9 / 11 instancesYesMost polished; Media Manager makes file transfer simple; "Pie 64-bit" or "Android 11" instance recommended.
LDPlayer 9Android 9YesLighter on resources; shared folder at Pictures/LDPlayer; good on mid-range PCs.
Android Studio emulatorAnyOnly with ARM system images (slow)Developer tool; works but x86 images can't run Edits and ARM images are sluggish. Not recommended for editing.
Older / lightweight emulators (Android 7 or below)Too oldOften noPlay Store reports "not compatible with your device". Skip.

This guide uses BlueStacks 5 in its examples; LDPlayer's steps are the same with different menu names. Download either only from its official website.

How to install Edits on Windows, step by step

Edits download PC

About fifteen minutes the first time, most of it the emulator download. After that, Edits opens like any desktop app.

1 · Emulator

BlueStacks 5 or LDPlayer 9 · official site only · free

Get BlueStacks

2 · Edits

Google Play inside the emulator · Developer: Instagram · free

Edits on Google Play
  1. Enable virtualization (section four) if Task Manager shows it disabled.
  2. Download and install the emulator from its official site. If the installer offers an Android version, pick Android 9 (Pie) 64-bit or newer.
  3. Launch it and sign in to Google Play. Open the Play Store icon inside the emulator and sign in with a Google account - any account works; it's only for the store.
  4. Search "Edits, an Instagram app" in the Play Store. Verify the developer is Instagram and the package in the listing URL is com.instagram.basel. Tap Install.
  5. Open Edits from the emulator home screen. Grant storage/media, camera and microphone permissions when asked (camera and mic will use your PC's webcam and microphone if you have them).
  6. Sign in with your Instagram username and password, plus a two-factor code if you use one. There's no Instagram app in the emulator, so there's no one-tap login.
  7. Pin it to the desktop - BlueStacks and LDPlayer can create a Windows shortcut that launches straight into Edits.
07

Getting footage into Edits and exports back to Windows

The emulator is a separate "device", so files don't automatically appear in both places. Each emulator gives you a bridge:

Into Edits

  • BlueStacks: open Media Manager from the sidebar → Import from Windows, pick your MP4/MOV clips; they land in the emulator's gallery and show up in Edits' import picker. Or drag and drop a file onto the emulator window.
  • LDPlayer: copy clips into the shared folder (by default Documents\LDPlayer\Pictures on Windows, visible as /sdcard/Pictures inside Android), or use the sidebar's file-transfer tool.
  • Record in-app: Edits' camera and teleprompter use your PC webcam and mic - a usable talking-head setup with the script on a big screen.

Out of Edits

  • Export in Edits as usual (up to 4K, no watermark). The file saves to the emulator's gallery / Movies folder.
  • BlueStacks: Media Manager → Export to Windows, or find it in the shared folder. LDPlayer: it's already in the shared folder on your Windows drive.
  • Upload from Windows at instagram.com (Reels upload works on the web), or post to any other platform directly.

Mouse and keyboard controls for Edits on PC

Keep the emulator in portrait for Edits - it's a vertical-video app and the layout assumes it. Set the emulator resolution to a tall preset (e.g. 1080 × 1920) so the timeline has room.

09

Performance settings for smooth 4K

  • CPU cores: 4 · RAM: 4-6 GB in the emulator's performance settings. More RAM than this rarely helps; starving it does.
  • Graphics renderer: hardware (DirectX / OpenGL) with your GPU selected, not software rendering. Update your GPU driver first.
  • Resolution: 1080 × 1920 portrait, 240 DPI. Higher makes the UI crisp but slows preview.
  • Frame rate: 60 for a responsive timeline; drop to 30 on weaker machines.
  • Hyper-V: BlueStacks and LDPlayer each ship a Hyper-V-compatible build; if you use WSL, Docker or Hyper-V on the same PC, install that variant to avoid conflicts.
  • Close other heavy apps while exporting; 4K renders use every core they can get.

On a mid-range laptop you can expect 1080p projects to feel native and 4K exports to take a bit longer than on a current flagship phone. On a desktop with a dedicated GPU, the PC is usually faster.

Edits not working on PC? Fixes for every error

Emulator won't start / "virtualization is disabled"

Enable VT-x or AMD SVM in BIOS/UEFI (section four). On some laptops it's under "Advanced" or "Security". Save, reboot, retry.

Emulator starts but is extremely slow

Same cause - virtualization off - or software rendering. Confirm Task Manager shows Virtualization: Enabled and switch the renderer to hardware with your GPU.

Play Store says "This app is not compatible with your device"

The instance is too old or lacks ARM support. Create a new instance on Android 9 or newer (BlueStacks Multi-Instance Manager → New instance → Pie 64-bit / Android 11), or update the emulator.

"Not available in your country"

Same regional rollout as phones. Sideload the genuine APK into the emulator via drag-and-drop - see the Edits APK guide; verify the package is com.instagram.basel.

Edits installs but crashes on open

Almost always a 32-bit or non-ARM instance. Recreate it as 64-bit with ARM support. Also ensure the emulator itself is updated.

Black preview or green video

Switch the renderer (OpenGL ↔ DirectX) in emulator settings, update the GPU driver, and disable "ASTC texture decoding" if the option exists.

Can't see my clips in the import picker

They aren't inside the emulator yet. Use Media Manager / the shared folder (section seven), then reopen the picker. If they're there but missing, grant Edits the Photos and videos / Storage permission in Android Settings → Apps → Edits.

Webcam or mic not detected

Enable camera and microphone in the emulator's device settings, allow it in Windows Settings → Privacy → Camera / Microphone, then grant the permission in Edits.

Can't log in

Confirm the credentials at instagram.com, complete two-factor, and check for restrictions. Full list in the login problems guide.

Hyper-V / WSL / Docker conflict

Install the emulator's Hyper-V-compatible build, or temporarily disable Hyper-V (run bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off as admin, reboot) while editing.

11

The coming desktop version of Edits

Meta has confirmed that a desktop Edits is in development. Platforms and timing haven't been announced, so this page doesn't assume a Windows build - but Windows is the platform with no native option today, which makes it the obvious target. When it ships, we'll update the Edits desktop page and the updates log, and this page will switch to the native route.

In the meantime, the emulator method isn't a compromise on features: you get the complete, current, signed Edits app, updated through Google Play, with 4K watermark-free exports - on a bigger screen with a real keyboard. For caption-heavy work it's arguably the best way to use Edits right now.

Edits on PC FAQ

The questions people ask most about running Edits on Windows.

Not natively yet. Meta has confirmed a desktop version is in development. Until it ships, Edits runs on Windows through a free Android emulator such as BlueStacks or LDPlayer, installed from Google Play inside the emulator.

Yes. Edits is free and so are the mainstream emulators. There is no paid PC version and no watermark.

No. Instagram has not released a Windows installer. Any site offering an "Edits .exe" or "Edits for PC setup" is not distributing a genuine product and should be avoided.

BlueStacks 5 and LDPlayer 9 are the most reliable because both include ARM translation, which the app needs, and both run the Play Store. Choose an Android 9 or newer instance.

The emulator instance is either too old an Android version or lacks ARM support. Create a new instance on Android 9 or newer with ARM translation enabled, or update the emulator.

Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, virtualization enabled, 8 GB RAM (16 GB for 4K), an SSD with 10 GB free, and a GPU with current drivers. Most laptops from the last five years qualify.

Yes. Copy clips into the emulator's shared folder or use its media manager; they appear in Edits' import picker. Exports go to the emulator's gallery, from where you copy them back to Windows.

No. Microsoft discontinued Windows Subsystem for Android in 2025, so an Android emulator is the current route.
