A talking-head video lives or dies on clarity and pace. This guide shows how to edit one in Instagram's free Edits app: film with the teleprompter for eye contact, clean up the audio with Enhance, cut out pauses and mistakes, add captions, cover cuts with B-roll and zooms, and balance music under your voice. Edits exports have no watermark. Every step is animated, with video walkthroughs at the end.

What makes a talking head work

A talking-head video is you speaking to the camera, so the edit has to keep attention without much else on screen. These are general creative suggestions, not Edits rules:

  • Hook in the first sentence. Say the point or the promise straight away.
  • One idea per video. Short and focused beats long and wandering.
  • Clean sound. Viewers forgive soft pictures faster than muddy audio.
  • Tight pacing. Cut pauses, repeats and filler.
  • Visual variety. Captions, zooms and B-roll keep it moving.

Plan the script in Ideas and structure scenes with storyboards. New to Edits? See the first Reel guide.

02

Film with the teleprompter

Social Samosa reports that the Edits teleprompter lets you upload a script that "scrolls in front of the front-facing camera" for a direct-to-camera look, with adjustable scroll speed and text size to help you keep eye contact with the lens. Primal Video adds that you can paste bullet points or a full script.

  1. Write a short script in plain, spoken words.
  2. Paste it into the teleprompter and set the speed and text size.
  3. Prop the phone at eye level in good light.
  4. Record in short takes, repeating any line you stumble on.

Full steps are in the teleprompter guide, and quality options in camera tools.

03

Clean up the audio with Enhance

Instagram's advanced audio tutorial describes Enhance as a one-tap way to reduce background noise, even out volume and make voices clearer. It also demonstrates fades on talking-to-camera clips.

  1. Select the clip with your voice.
  2. Tap Enhance and compare with and without it.
  3. Add a short fade-out where a talking segment ends so audio doesn't cut abruptly.

The best fix is still a good recording: film close to the phone, away from fans and traffic. See advanced audio tools and audio problems.

04

Cut pauses and mistakes

Tight cuts are what make a talking head feel professional. In the timeline you can split clips, delete sections and slide the rest together, as Async describes.

  1. Play the clip and split before and after each pause, stumble or filler word.
  2. Delete the gap and close it so speech flows.
  3. Keep a tiny breath between sentences so it doesn't sound robotic.
  4. Vary the framing every few cuts so jump cuts feel intentional.

Details in trim, split and reorder.

05

Add captions

Many viewers watch without sound, so captions matter most on talking heads. Async says Edits can generate automatic captions, and you can adjust font, size, colour, placement and animation.

  1. Generate captions from your speech.
  2. Proofread names, numbers and jargon.
  3. Style them for contrast, and keep them clear of the face and the edges.
  4. Highlight key words with a colour if you like.

See captions, and captions not working if they fail.

06

Cover cuts with B-roll and zooms

Showing something else while you keep talking resets attention.

  • B-roll: add a clip over your voice to illustrate the point.
  • Slow zoom: push in on key lines using keyframes.
  • Text callouts: add a keyword with text and titles.
  • Effects: tag a product or highlight an object with effects.
  • Background: remove or replace it with green screen.
07

Add music without drowning your voice

Light background music adds energy, but voice must lead. These are general mixing guidelines:

  • Pick instrumental music without competing vocals.
  • Keep it well below your voice, and let it rise in pauses.
  • Fade it in at the start and out at the end.
  • Check on a phone speaker before you export.

Finally export in 2K and share to Instagram. See music and audio.

Film with the teleprompter, clean up the voice with Enhance, cut pauses and mistakes, add captions, cover cuts with B-roll or zooms, and keep music well below your voice before exporting.

Yes. Social Samosa reports you can upload a script that scrolls in front of the front-facing camera, with adjustable speed and text size.

Use Enhance, which Instagram says reduces background noise, evens out volume and makes voices clearer.

Generate automatic captions from your speech, then proofread and style them. Edits lets you change font, size, colour, placement and animation.

Change the zoom or framing every few cuts, or cover the cut with B-roll or a text callout.
