Edits is Instagram's free video editor, and the iPhone is where it's most at home - new features land here first and the camera makes full use of the hardware. The download tool below checks your device and iOS version and hands you the right App Store link (or a QR code if you're reading this on a computer). Then: requirements, a five-minute setup, what's iPhone-specific, and fixes if the download won't go.

iPhone 8 / X and newer can run it. Check in Settings → General → About.
Plus cache and projects - keep a few GB free if you shoot 4K.
Listed as iPhone-only; iPad runs it in compatibility mode, Apple-silicon Macs via the Mac App Store.
Six steps. The last one is where it stops being an install and starts being a habit.
Step 01
Edits needs iOS 16.3 or later - that's iPhone 8 and newer - and about 350 MB for the download, more as projects build up. Settings → General → About shows the version; Settings → General → iPhone Storage shows the space.
Step 02
Use the download tool above, or search the App Store for "Edits: Video Editor". Check the seller reads Instagram, Inc. - a few look-alike apps use similar names and icons.
Step 03
Face ID, Touch ID or your Apple Account password. There's no payment step - the app is free, and the "In-App Purchases" note on the listing doesn't gate the editor or export. See Pricing.
Step 04
Open Edits and log in with the Instagram account you post from - that's what powers direct sharing, the Insights tab and saved Reels in Ideas. One account at a time; switching means logging out.
Step 05
Three prompts: Camera (to record), Microphone (voiceover and sound on recordings) and Photos. Choose Full Access for Photos so imports show everything; "Selected Photos" means re-picking every time.
Step 06
New project → record with the camera or import → trim the hook → auto captions → export at 1080p with no watermark → share to Instagram. About fifteen minutes the first time.

Listed as iPhone-only; installs on supporting iPads and runs in a phone-shaped window. Fine for editing, not a native layout.
iOS lets you grant Full or Selected access and change it any time in Settings → Edits.
Work through them in order. The first two cover almost every "I can't get Edits on my iPhone" message we see.
Your iOS is below 16.3, or it's an iPhone 7 or older that can't run 16.3.
Your Apple Account region may be one where the listing isn't available yet, or the search matched the wrong app.
Slow connection, low storage, or a paused App Store download.
Usually an outdated build, a network block, or an Instagram login challenge.
