Apply Effects in One Tap

Effects let you highlight, tag, blur or distort a specific person or object, work that normally takes frame-by-frame editing. In Edits, Instagram's tutorial shows it in a few taps: open your video, choose Effects from the bottom bar, pick an effect, and tap the spot on the video. This guide walks through the Tag effect step by step, explains the other effects Edits offers, and covers tips and fixes. Every section is animated, with video walkthroughs at the end.

What effects do

Effects in Edits target a specific person or object in your video. Instagram's tutorial describes using them to highlight, tag or blur things, and the page's summary also mentions distorting and labelling. Normally that would mean editing frame by frame; the tutorial says the effect targets a specific object in seconds.

  • Tag a company, brand or product so viewers see what appears in the video.
  • Highlight the thing you want people to look at.
  • Blur something you don't want shown, such as a background detail.
  • Label or distort for emphasis or humour.

Effects suit any content type, such as lifestyle, fashion or tech. Edits is free and the tutorial is for iOS and Android. Names and locations can change between versions, so follow your own screen. For a bigger overview of the editor, see features explained.

02

Open the Effects tab

  1. Open your video in an edit in Edits.
  2. Scroll along the bottom navigation bar.
  3. Select Effects.
  4. Browse and preview the effects available.

New to the timeline? Read trim, split and reorder first, or the first Reel guide.

03

Add a Tag effect

The Tag effect is the one Instagram demonstrates. Its steps:

  1. Open your video in an edit.
  2. Select Effects in the bottom navigation bar.
  3. Choose Tag.
  4. Tap the spot on the video where you want the tag.
  5. Type the tag text, such as a brand or product name.

Tags help viewers see which companies, brands or products appear while they watch, which suits product videos. The tutorial doesn't say whether a tag follows the object as it moves or how many tags you can add, so check the result on playback and nudge the timing if needed. Pair tags with text and titles.

04

Highlight, blur, distort and more

Instagram's page says effects can highlight, tag or blur people or objects, and its summary also lists distort and label. It only demonstrates Tag, so the steps below are the general approach and may differ in your app.

EffectUse it toTip
TagName a brand, product or placeKeep the text short
HighlightDraw the eye to a subjectUse once per scene
BlurHide a detail or soften a distractionCheck every frame it appears in
Distort / labelAdd emphasis or humourDon't overdo it

Want to blur the whole background instead? See cinematic filters, crop and blur.

05

Other effects in Edits

Reviewers list further effects. Primal Video's guide names speed controls, reverse, AI Restyle, and regular effects such as flicker, blurring or pixelation and transitions like camera pan and cinema-style zoom, which it says generate quickly.

The guide doesn't say whether all effects are one-tap, so the label "one tap" here follows Instagram's own tutorial title.

06

Tips for clean results

  • One effect per moment. Too many effects compete for attention.
  • Start the effect when the subject appears and end it when it leaves.
  • Keep tag text short and readable, with good contrast.
  • Preview on a phone screen at normal speed.
  • Disclose sponsored products as required by the platform and local rules when you tag brands.
07

A simple effects workflow

  1. Cut the video to its final length first.
  2. Open Effects and choose one.
  3. Tap the target and add text if needed.
  4. Play it back and adjust timing.
  5. Add captions and music: captions, music.
  6. Export with the export guide.
