Reimagine Your Videos With Restyle

Restyle is an AI effect in Edits that changes how a clip looks, such as your outfit, location, lighting or overall style, using presets you apply with a tap. A plain walk can become a comic book panel, a dreamy soft-focus scene or a video-game world. This guide covers how to use Restyle step by step, what the presets do, the 10-second clip rule, how to pick clips that restyle well, how to combine it with the rest of your edit and what to check before sharing. Each step is animated, with video walkthroughs at the end.

What Restyle does

Restyle is an AI-powered creation effect in Edits. It lets you change elements of a video, such as your outfit, location, lighting or style, using presets you apply with a tap. It came from Meta's work on generative video editing, launched in June 2025 in the Edits app, the Meta AI app and on the Meta AI website.

It's good for:

  • Standing out. One striking moment can make a Reel memorable.
  • Telling a story. Change the location or mood without reshooting.
  • Playing with trends, such as comic, anime or video-game looks.
  • Experimenting fast, with no editing skill needed.

Restyle is one of several AI tools in Edits; see the overview in AI effects. Features, limits and availability change often, so check what your own app offers.

02

Use Restyle, step by step

Instagram's own tutorial gives three steps:

  1. Open a project and select the timeline frame (clip) you want to restyle.
  2. Tap the Restyle icon in the bottom toolbar.
  3. Browse the preset categories and choose one that fits.

Then preview the result and keep it, try another preset or undo. Before you start, trim the clip to the moment you want to change; see the trim, split and reorder tutorial. New to the editor? Read the first Reel guide. Icons and labels change between app versions, so follow what your own screen shows.

03

Choose a preset: outfit, location, lighting and style

Presets work like filters, but they change the content of the scene, not just its colour. Meta's launch announcement said there were more than 50 presets and described what they can alter:

What changesExample looks reportedBest for
StyleGraphic novel, vintage comic book illustration, video-game styleTrends, humour, stylised intros
LightingDreamy soft focus with sparkles, fluorescent lightingMood, fashion, beauty
LocationDesert, beach and snowy scenesTravel and story ideas
OutfitCostume or battle clothingCosplay, comedy, character shots

A note on text prompts. Instagram's tutorial describes Restyle through presets. Meta said at launch that editing with your own text prompts was coming later, and some later articles mention describing a change in words. If your version offers a text box, keep prompts short and specific. If it doesn't, presets are all you need.

04

The 10-second rule

Restyle works on individual clips of up to 10 seconds. Instagram's tutorial advises keeping the clip under 10 seconds, and Meta's launch offer described a limited-time free edit of the first 10 seconds of a video.

  • Trim first. Cut the clip to its best seconds, then restyle.
  • Split long clips and restyle only the part you want.
  • Use it for a moment, not the whole video. A short, striking shot has more impact than ten minutes of AI.
  • Keep a copy. Duplicate the project before you restyle so you can go back.
05

Pick clips that restyle well

AI tools do best when the picture is clear. These are general tips, not Edits settings:

  • A clear subject. One person or object, well separated from the background.
  • Good, even lighting. Dark or flickering clips give messy results.
  • Steady, simple movement. A slow walk or turn works better than fast whip-pans.
  • Short and in focus. Blurry footage stays blurry, whatever the style.
  • One preset at a time. Compare a few on the same clip and keep the best.

Filming tips: camera tools and green screen.

06

Combine Restyle with the rest of your edit

Restyle is most effective as one beat in a normal edit:

  1. Cut your video as usual with a strong opening.
  2. Restyle one short clip, such as the reveal or the turning point.
  3. Smooth the change with a transition into and out of the restyled shot.
  4. Add a sound or beat drop with music and audio.
  5. Finish with text and captions: titles and captions.

More looks to pair with it: effects and cinematic filters.

07

Check, then share

Always review before you post:

  • Watch the whole result, including the edges and faces, in case anything looks distorted.
  • Check for a watermark. One guide notes a Meta AI watermark may appear during processing, so look at the exported file before publishing.
  • Be honest. Don't present a restyled scene as real footage of an event or product, and follow platform rules on AI-generated or altered content.
  • Get permission before restyling someone else's face or footage.

You can share from Edits straight to Instagram or Facebook, or download the file. See the export and save guide.
