Edits / Features / Edits review
Short version: Edits is the best free editor for Instagram Reels, and for most creators the best mobile editor, full stop - a camera built for talking to it, captions you can actually fix, clean exports and your Reels' retention curves in the same app. It is not a desktop editor, it handles one account at a time, and its AI tools are region-gated. Here's the long version: what we tested, tool-by-tool scores, the frustrations, and who should install it or skip it.
We've used Edits daily for months, across an iPhone and a mid-range Android, for talking-head Reels, product videos and repurposed long-form. The pattern is consistent: the capture-to-post loop is the best on mobile - teleprompter camera, editable captions, clean export, then the retention curve of what you just posted, all in one app - and the gaps are around the edges: no desktop, one account, AI that may not be in your country.
What tips it from "good" to "the one to recommend" is that it's free with no watermark and updated monthly. Most of the complaints in early reviews - the 10-minute cap, clumsy caption timing, thin effects - have since been fixed or softened (see every update). The ones that remain are structural, and Instagram has said the biggest - desktop - is coming.
Who should skip it: agencies managing several accounts, anyone editing horizontal YouTube video, and editors who need CapCut's template depth today rather than next year.
The right column is what to check against your own workflow before installing. If none of it applies to you, there isn't a better free option.
Out of 5, weighted for short vertical video. The overall 4.4 is the average of these, with export and camera counted twice because they're what you touch on every Reel.
Not a feature-list review. These are the eight things we checked with real footage on real phones, and what came out. Your phone, accent and footage will shift the numbers; the pattern should hold.
A 30-second 1080p/30 clip exported at ~12 Mbps; posted, it survived Instagram's recompression better than a CapCut export of the same clip. Blur guide
Native English near-perfect; accented English needed 2–4 fixes per 30 s; fast overlapping speech needed re-timing. Still faster than typing.
Scrubbing stayed fluid with two overlays and captions. Export of a 60-s 1080p Reel: about 40 seconds. 4K roughly doubles it.
Scroll speed needed one adjustment; after that, eye-line stayed on lens. The feature that justifies the install for talking-head creators. Talking-head guide
Checked all four corners and the last two seconds on 1080p and 4K exports: nothing added. Watermark page
Retention curve, skip points and 3-Reel comparison are in Edits; the Instagram app shows the totals. Analytics guide
All fixed by freeing storage or re-exporting. One draft went missing after an update and came back on reinstall. Export failed
From install to a captioned, exported Reel with music. The first-Reel guide gets it under 15.
The honest comparison: Edits wins on price, camera, cleanliness and Insights; CapCut wins on sheer volume and desktop; VN is the quiet alternative if you want a desktop app for free.

Note: scores are ours, for short vertical video posted to Instagram. If your main platform is YouTube or you edit horizontal video, CapCut or VN with a desktop app may suit you better. More in Comparisons and CapCut alternatives.
Talking-head, tutorials, product videos, vlogs, food, travel. You get the best camera, captions and insights on mobile for nothing.
Worth running alongside your current editor: export clean 9:16 from Edits for Reels, keep the other app for its templates until Edits' library catches up.

One account at a time and no desktop make it a poor fit for managing clients or cutting long YouTube video. Revisit when the desktop version ships.
