Edits / Comparisons / Edits vs Instagram editor
Same company, two editors. The one inside Instagram is where most Reels get made: record, pick a trending track or template, post - in minutes, with nothing to install. Edits is Instagram's separate editor app for when a Reel deserves a real edit: a multi-track timeline, keyframes, projects and versions, styled bilingual captions, audio tools, a teleprompter camera and Insights, then straight back to Instagram with the audio tag. They're not rivals so much as two gears. Ten rounds, an honest score, and when to shift.
There's no wrong answer here - they're the same company and they hand off to each other. The built-in editor wins when the clip is simple and timing matters: trend audio, a template, ten minutes, done. Edits wins the moment you want captions that look designed, audio that sounds clean, overlays and keyframes, a camera with a teleprompter, or the ability to reopen and rework a project - and it gives you a clean master file you own. Three rounds to the built-in editor (speed, trends, effects gallery), two ties (price, camera), five to Edits.
The use-both section is the workflow most Reels creators settle on.
Scored for a creator who wants Reels to look and sound good. A creator who posts several quick, trend-driven clips a day would weight rounds 3 and 4 up and live in the built-in editor - and that's fine. Instagram changes its in-app editor often, so check what your version offers.
Free, no watermark. Same Instagram login. Pricing
Free, no watermark, already on your phone.
Multi-track: clips, overlays, text, audio, SFX; keyframes for position, scale, rotation, opacity. Keyframes
Trim, cut, speed, scale, crop, rotate, undo, green screen, stickers. Fine for a stitched sequence; limited once you want layers or precise timing.
Separate app: open, edit, export or share, then finish in Instagram. A few more taps.
No app switch: record or pick clips, add audio, post. The fastest path from idea to published, by a distance.
Curated Reel templates and the Inspiration tab. Templates
Trend-tied templates and "use this audio" flows that live where the trends do. If you're riding a format this week, it's here first.
One tap, free, styled, placed and edited per line, bilingual in 15 languages, automatic lyrics. Auto captions
A captions sticker exists, but with fewer styling controls - and users report captions occasionally disappearing.
Instagram's tagged library plus import, Enhance, ducking, loudness match, beat markers, voiceover. Music & audio
Full access to Instagram's music and sound effects, search by track. Audio tools beyond volume and voiceover are thin.
HD→4K, 24–60 fps, HDR/SDR, 10-minute takes, teleprompter, timer, green screen, speed. Camera tools
Records up to 20 minutes now, with undo for the last clip, steadier green screen and a touch-up slider. Longer takes, fewer settings.
Clean file at 1080p, up to 4K on supported phones; you keep the master, and posting uses Instagram's uploader. Export settings
Builds and posts inside Instagram, which compresses on upload. You don't get a master file to reuse elsewhere.
Projects tab with Project Versions, reopen and rework any edit, locked template clips. Getting started
Drafts you can reopen, but no versions and a lighter project model.
Dozens of effects, In & Out, Opacity blending, AI effects (Animate, Restyle, Cutouts). AI effects
A vast gallery of creator-made effects and filters that only exists inside Instagram. Hard to match for volume.

Note: Instagram updates the in-app Reels tools every few weeks and rolls features out by region; check your app. Our full take on Edits alone is in the review; the CapCut comparison is here; all head-to-heads in Comparisons.
The hand-off is built in: Edits shares straight to Instagram, with the audio tag intact, into the same posting flow you already know.
Edits is free, exports clean, and hands your Reel back to Instagram with the audio tag.
