Instagram Edits download for Mac: the 30-second answer
On a Mac with an Apple silicon chip (M1, M2, M3, M4 or newer), open the App Store app, search "Edits, an Instagram app", click the iPhone & iPad Apps tab, and click Get. The iOS version installs like any Mac app, lands in Applications, and runs natively - full 4K export, no watermark, no emulator. It's free, and you sign in with the Instagram account you already have.
If your Mac has an Intel processor, that route is closed: Intel Macs can't run iPhone apps. Section five covers what works instead. Everything else on this page - requirements, the exact clicks, how touch gestures map to a trackpad, getting footage from Finder into the app and finished video back out, and the handful of Mac-specific errors - is here so you don't have to piece it together from forum threads.
How Instagram Edits runs on a Mac
Since Apple moved Macs to its own M-series chips, they share an architecture with iPhone and iPad. That lets the Mac App Store offer iOS apps directly - developers can opt in, and Instagram has for Edits. The app you get is the real iPhone/iPad build, running in a resizable window at phone or tablet proportions, with macOS handling the window, menus and file access. Nothing is translated or emulated, which is why performance is as good as - usually better than - a recent iPhone.
Three consequences follow. First, the feature set is identical to iOS: timeline, keyframes, auto captions and translation, AI cutouts and Restyle, teleprompter, royalty-free music, Insights, 4K export. Second, the interface is the phone interface - designed for touch, so a few gestures need a trackpad equivalent (section six). Third, updates arrive through the Mac App Store on the same schedule as iPhone, so you're never behind.
Mac requirements for Instagram Edits
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Chip | Apple silicon: M1, M2, M3, M4 or newer (any variant - base, Pro, Max, Ultra). Check with Apple menu → About This Mac → "Chip". Intel Macs cannot run iPhone apps. |
| macOS | A recent macOS version; the App Store hides iPhone apps your macOS can't run. Update via System Settings → General → Software Update if Edits doesn't appear. |
| Memory | 8 GB unified memory (every Apple silicon Mac) is ample; 4K projects are smoother than on most phones. |
| Storage | A few hundred MB for the app; keep several GB free for projects and 4K exports. |
| Account | An Apple ID signed into the Mac App Store, and an Instagram account for Edits itself. |
| Camera / mic (optional) | The built-in FaceTime camera and mic work for in-app recording and the teleprompter; an external webcam also works. |
How to install Instagram Edits from the Mac App Store
Mac App Store
Open Edits in the App StorePrefer the phone?
Android & iPhone guide →- Confirm the chip - Apple menu → About This Mac → Chip reads Apple M1 or newer.
- Open the App Store app on the Mac (Launchpad or Spotlight → "App Store") and search Edits, an Instagram app. Or click the button above: it opens the listing directly in the Mac App Store.
- Click the "iPhone & iPad Apps" tab at the top of the search results. Results default to Mac-native apps, so Edits is hidden until you switch - this is why people think it "isn't available on Mac".
- Verify the listing: publisher Instagram, Inc., price Get, and a "Designed for iPad" / "Designed for iPhone" note under the name.
- Click Get → Install and confirm with Touch ID or your Apple ID password. Apple asks for this on every download, free or paid; nothing is charged.
- Open Edits from Launchpad, Applications, or the Open button. Allow Photos, Camera and Microphone when asked.
- Sign in with Instagram - username and password, plus a two-factor code if you use one. (There's no Instagram app on Mac, so there's no one-tap "Continue as" here.)
Instagram Edits on an Intel Mac: your options
Intel-based Macs (everything sold before late 2020, plus a few models into 2021) can't run iPhone apps, so the Mac App Store route doesn't apply and Edits won't appear in search at all. Four realistic alternatives, best first:
- Edit on an iPhone or iPad, finish on the Mac. Edits is at its best on the device it was designed for. Export the clean 4K file and AirDrop it to the Mac for anything else you need to do - thumbnails, re-encoding, uploading.
- Run the Android version in an emulator. Android emulators with Intel Mac builds can install Edits from Google Play inside the emulator. Performance on older Intel hardware is modest, and the touch-to-mouse mapping is clumsier than on Apple silicon. Our PC guide covers emulator setup; the same steps apply on an Intel Mac.
- Wait for the desktop version. Meta has confirmed a desktop Edits is in development (section eleven). An Intel-compatible build hasn't been promised, so don't plan around it.
- Use the built-in Instagram web uploader. For posting only - not editing - instagram.com in a browser accepts finished Reels from any Mac.
Trackpad and keyboard controls for Edits on Mac
Edits is a touch app, and macOS translates gestures automatically. Once you know the mapping it's fast - arguably faster than on a phone for precise timeline work.
| On iPhone | On Mac | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Tap | Click | Buttons, selecting clips, placing the playhead |
| Touch and drag | Click and drag | Trimming clip edges, moving clips, keyframe handles |
| Long-press | Click and hold | Reordering clips, context options |
| Pinch to zoom timeline | Trackpad pinch (two fingers) | Frame-level precision |
| Swipe to scrub | Two-finger scroll left/right | Moving along the timeline |
| Type | Mac keyboard | Captions, find & replace, teleprompter script - noticeably better on a real keyboard |
| Rotate device | Window size (⌘+ / ⌘- in some builds; drag the corner) | Larger preview |
Two Mac-only wins: the keyboard makes caption corrections and script writing much quicker, and the trackpad's two-finger scroll gives finer timeline scrubbing than a thumb. One limitation: a few gestures that rely on two simultaneous touches (rotating a sticker with two fingers, for example) are awkward; use the on-screen rotation handle instead.
Importing footage into Edits on a Mac
Because Edits is an iOS app, its import picker thinks in terms of the Photos library first. Three ways to get clips in:
- Photos library - the default. If iCloud Photos is on, everything shot on your iPhone is already here; just tap + → import. Clips you dragged into the Photos app on the Mac appear too.
- Files (Finder) - in the import picker choose the Files / Browse option to open a standard file dialog and pick any MP4 or MOV from any folder, external drive or iCloud Drive. Best for footage from a camera or a download.
- Record in-app - the FaceTime camera and mic work with Edits' camera and teleprompter, which makes the Mac a decent talking-head setup: script on screen, lens at eye level.
Formats: standard H.264 and HEVC in MP4/MOV import directly; ProRes or unusual codecs may need a quick re-encode in QuickTime (File → Export As) first. Edits handles 4K sources and keeps them at 4K through export.
Exporting and publishing from Edits on Mac
Export works exactly as on iPhone: choose a resolution up to 4K, export, and get a clean file with no watermark. On the Mac it lands in one of two places:
- Photos - the default. Open the Photos app on the Mac, find the clip in Recents, and drag it to the Desktop or any folder to get a plain MP4.
- Files - choose Save to Files in the export sheet to write directly to a folder, iCloud Drive or an external disk.
Publishing to Instagram: the Share to Instagram option expects the Instagram app, which doesn't exist on Mac, so direct publishing may not be offered. The practical path is export → upload the file at instagram.com in your browser (Reels upload is supported on the web), or AirDrop it to your iPhone and post from there. The Insights tab still works on Mac, since it reads your account data from Instagram's servers rather than from the app.
For other platforms - TikTok, YouTube Shorts, a client - the exported file is ready as-is.
Edits on Mac vs iPhone: what's actually different
| Area | iPhone | Mac (Apple silicon) |
|---|---|---|
| Features | All | All - same build |
| Performance | Good on recent models | Excellent - desktop chip, active cooling on most models |
| Screen | Phone-sized, touch | Resizable window, larger preview, phone proportions |
| Captions & scripts | On-screen keyboard | Full keyboard - faster |
| Timeline precision | Pinch and thumb | Trackpad pinch and scroll - finer |
| Sign-in | One tap via Instagram app | Username + password (no Instagram app on Mac) |
| Publish to Instagram | Direct from Edits | Export, then upload on instagram.com or from iPhone |
| Projects sync | Projects stay on the device they were made on; transfer finished exports, not projects | |
| Price | Free | Free |
Good pattern for people with both: shoot and rough-cut on the iPhone where the footage is, or do the whole edit on the Mac when it involves lots of captions, keyframes or a long project - then publish from whichever device is handier.
Edits not installing on Mac? Fixes
Edits doesn't appear in the Mac App Store search
Click the iPhone & iPad Apps tab at the top of the results - the default tab shows only Mac-native apps. If it's still missing: your Mac is Intel (section five), macOS is too old (update it), or Edits hasn't reached your region's store (same regional rollout as iPhone).
"This app is not available on your Mac" / greyed-out Get
Your macOS version is below what the current Edits build requires. System Settings → General → Software Update, install, retry.
The App Store asks for a password or Touch ID
Normal for every download, free or paid. Nothing is charged.
Crashes on launch
Quit, then relaunch; if it persists, delete the app from Applications, restart the Mac, reinstall. Make sure macOS is current - iPhone-app compatibility is tied to the OS version.
Can't import clips / Photos picker is empty
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → enable Edits. For Finder files, use the Files option in the import picker instead.
No camera or microphone
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera (and Microphone) → enable Edits.
Can't log in
Confirm the credentials work at instagram.com, complete two-factor if prompted, and check for account restrictions. Full list in the login problems guide.
Window is tiny
Drag a corner to resize; the app keeps phone proportions but scales up cleanly. Some builds also honour ⌘+ / ⌘-.
The coming desktop version of Edits
Meta has confirmed that a dedicated desktop version of Edits is in development. Details on platforms, timing and whether it will be a native Mac app, a web app, or both haven't been announced, so nothing on this page assumes it. When it ships, Apple silicon users will have a choice between the iOS-app-on-Mac route described here and the desktop build; Intel Mac and Windows users may finally get a native option. We'll update the Edits desktop page and the updates log as soon as it's live.
Until then, the Mac App Store route is not a workaround - it's a full, native, officially supported way to run Edits on a Mac, and for caption-heavy or long projects it's the best Edits experience available.
Instagram Edits on Mac FAQ
The questions people ask most about running Edits on a Mac.
There is no separate Mac build, but the iOS Edits app installs and runs natively on Apple silicon Macs (M1 or newer) from the Mac App Store, under the iPhone & iPad Apps tab. Meta has also said a desktop version is in development.
Not natively - Intel Macs cannot run iPhone apps. Options are an Android emulator that supports Intel Macs, editing on an iPhone or iPad, or waiting for Meta's announced desktop version.
Yes. It is the same free app with no subscription and no watermark. The Mac App Store asks for Touch ID or your password to confirm the download, but nothing is charged.
Search results default to Mac apps. Click the iPhone & iPad Apps tab at the top of the results. If it still doesn't appear, your Mac is Intel-based, your macOS is too old, or Edits hasn't reached your region's store yet.
Click replaces tap, click-and-drag replaces touch-drag, and trackpad pinch zooms the timeline. Two-finger scroll moves along the timeline. The window can be resized and runs at phone proportions.
Projects are stored on the device they were created on and don't sync automatically. Export the finished video and transfer it with AirDrop, iCloud Drive or Photos if you need it on another device.
Yes. The import picker opens the Photos library by default; use the Files option to browse any folder on your Mac, or add clips to Photos first.
Yes. Exports are identical to the iPhone version: up to 4K, no watermark, saved to Photos or Files.
