How to Edit Instagram Reels Step by Step

Editing is where a Reel is made or lost. These eight edits, in order, take raw clips to a finished Reel in about 20 minutes: import, trim, reorder, music, captions, text, transitions and export. Every step shows the tap in the Instagram app and the better version in the free Edits app.

The eight edits, in order

Do them in this sequence and you never redo work: structure first (import, trim, order), then sound, then everything on top of the picture, then export. Each step shows the Edits version and, in the pink box, how to do it inside Instagram.

1

Edit 01

Import your clips in rough order

Open Edits, tap New project, and select your clips and photos from the camera roll in the order you tap them. Don't agonise - you'll reorder in step 3. The canvas is 9:16 by default; landscape clips land with bars you'll fix later.

  • Shoot or import more than you need: 8-12 clips for a 30-second Reel
  • Photos work too - they become 3-second clips you can stretch
  • Recorded in Edits? Takes from the camera are already in the project (camera tools)
In the Instagram app: Create (+) → Reel → tap the gallery and select clips. Instagram lets you trim each one before it lands on the timeline.
2

Edit 02

Trim and split

Tap a clip and drag the white handles at each end to cut the dead air - the breath before you speak, the reach for the phone after. For a long clip, move the playhead to the moment and tap split so you can delete the middle or move a piece elsewhere. Pinch the timeline to zoom to single frames.

  • Start every clip on movement or the first word, never on stillness
  • Cut on action: split mid-movement and the join is invisible
  • Target 1-3 seconds per clip for a montage; 5-10 s for talking
  • Full walkthrough: trim & split clips
In the Instagram app: tap Edit clips, then drag the ends of each clip. There's no split; delete and re-add the clip twice if you need a gap.

Edit 03

Reorder and set the pace

Long-press a clip and drag it to move it. Put the result first - the finished dish, the after photo, the punchline - then show how. Then set speed: 0.5× for a slow reveal, 2-4× for a process, a freeze frame to hold a moment, reverse for a loop.

  • Fast cuts early, longer shots once the viewer is hooked
  • Speed up anything that takes more than 3 seconds but has to be shown
  • A freeze frame under a text label is the cheapest way to add emphasis
In the Instagram app: drag clips in Edit clips. Speed is set per clip before recording, so uploaded clips keep their original pace.

Edit 04

Add music and a voiceover

Tap Audio, pick a track from the library and drag it so the drop lands on your best cut. Edits shows beat markers on the track - snap your clip edges to them and the edit feels tight without trying. Record a voiceover over the timeline, then open the mixer to balance: voice at 0, music 10-15 dB under it.

In the Instagram app: tap Audio for music and Voiceover on the edit screen; the volume sliders are under Controls.
5

Edit 05

Add captions

Tap Captions → Auto captions. Edits transcribes the speech, syncs it word by word and shows the transcript so you can fix misheard words with find & replace. Pick a style - boxed, bold or highlighted keyword - and drag the block into the centre of the frame, clear of the bottom caption area and right-hand buttons.

  • Most viewers scroll silent; captions are the single biggest completion lift
  • Two lines maximum per caption, big enough to read on a phone at arm's length
  • Highlight one keyword per line in your accent colour
  • Full guide: add captions to Reels · safe zones in the spec guide
In the Instagram app: tap the sticker icon → Captions. You can change the style and position but not edit the words after they're generated.
6

Edit 06

Add the text hook, labels and stickers

The first two seconds decide everything. Add a text layer at 0:00 with one line - the result, the mistake or the number - and end it at 2 s. Then add any labels (step names, "Day 3", prices) timed to the clip they describe. One sticker is a design choice; six is noise.

  • Hook formulas and 40 examples: Reel hooks
  • Use the same two fonts on every Reel so your grid looks like one account
  • Animate text in with a keyframe or a preset, never both
  • Text tools: text & titles
In the Instagram app: tap Aa to add text, then tap the text and use the timeline bar at the bottom to set when it appears and disappears.
7

Edit 07

Transitions, effects and color

Tap between two clips to add a transition - only where the scene actually changes; a hard cut is the right choice everywhere else. Then apply one filter or a light color adjustment to all clips so they match. Effects (pop-out, cinematic, AI restyle) are the garnish: one per Reel, on a beat.

In the Instagram app: filters apply to the whole Reel from the edit screen; there are no clip-to-clip transitions, so cut on action instead.
8

Edit 08

Export and post

Tap Export. The defaults are what Instagram wants: 1080 × 1920, 30 fps, H.264, high quality, and no watermark. Save to camera roll or tap Share to Instagram, which opens the Reels share screen with your video loaded - add the cover and caption there. The project stays editable, so version two is a two-minute job.

In the Instagram app: there's no export - tap Next and go straight to the cover, caption and share screen (steps 6-7 of making a Reel).
AVOID

Six editing habits that cost views

Habit 1

Editing before trimming

Captions and text are timed to the clip. Trim first or you redo every layer.

Habit 2

A transition on every cut

Hard cuts are the native language of Reels. Save transitions for real scene changes.

Habit 3

Text in the dead zones

The bottom and right edge are covered by Instagram's UI. Keep text centred - safe zone map.

Habit 4

Music louder than voice

If people can't hear you, they scroll. Voice at 0 dB, music at −12 to −15.

Habit 5

Exporting from a download

Each export recompresses. Always export from the project, not a saved copy - why Reels go blurry.

Habit 6

Watermarked editors

A third-party logo in the corner reads as low effort and some platforms downrank it. Edits exports without one.

WHICH

Instagram's editor vs Edits: which to use

Instagram's built-in editor is fine for a one-take Reel with a song and a caption. The moment you have more than three clips, a voiceover, or text that needs timing, Edits saves you the redo.
