02–05

Each spec, explained

1

Spec 01

Dimensions and aspect ratio: 1080 × 1920 at 9:16

Reels are built for a phone held upright, so the native size is 1080 pixels wide by 1920 tall - a 9:16 ratio. Export at exactly that and Instagram displays it pixel-for-pixel. Upload 4:5 or 1:1 and it still works, but with dark bars above and below in the Reels tab.

  • Shooting on a phone? Every modern camera records 9:16 when upright; just don't rotate it
  • 4K (2160 × 3840) is accepted but downscaled to 1080p, so it only adds upload time
  • In the home feed Instagram crops Reels to about 4:5, trimming the top and bottom - another reason to keep the action in the middle
  • Horizontal footage? Reframe it in Edits rather than letting Instagram letterbox it

Spec 02

Safe zones: where text and faces survive

Instagram draws its own interface over your Reel - username and search at the top, caption and audio at the bottom, action buttons down the right. Anything you put there gets covered. Keep captions, faces and logos inside the centre area.

  • Top ~250 px: the Reels/Following tabs and search
  • Bottom ~420 px: username, caption, audio ticker and the progress bar
  • Right ~120 px: like, comment, share, save and more
  • That leaves roughly 960 × 1250 px in the middle - about 65% of the frame
  • Edits shows these zones as an overlay; see placing captions
Quick test: post the Reel as a draft and preview it. If any word is under a button or the caption, nudge it up and toward the left.

Spec 03

Length: 3 seconds to 20 minutes, but under 3 minutes for reach

The hard limits are a 3-second minimum and a 20-minute maximum, recorded in-app or uploaded. The number that actually matters is 3 minutes: Instagram does not recommend longer Reels to people who don't follow you, so anything past that only reaches your existing audience.

  • 7–30 s gets the most completions and replays, the two strongest ranking signals
  • 30–90 s suits tutorials and storytelling once you have a hook that holds
  • Over 3 min: fine for a loyal audience, invisible to new viewers
  • Have an 8-minute video? Cut it into Reels instead of posting one long one
4

Spec 04

File size, format, frame rate and bitrate

Instagram accepts files up to 4 GB, but size isn't the problem - compression is. Every Reel is re-encoded on upload. Give it a clean MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) at 10–15 Mbps and 30 fps and the recompression is invisible. Hand it a low-bitrate or variable-frame-rate file and it comes out blurry.

  • MP4 or MOV; skip HEVC (H.265), AVI, WMV and GIF
  • 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps all work - just keep it constant through the file
  • Upload on Wi-Fi and turn on Upload at highest quality in Settings → Data usage
  • Still soft after upload? Work through fix blurry Reels or blurry export from Edits
5

Spec 05

Cover photo and the profile grid crop

The cover is the frame people see on your profile and in search. Upload it at 1080 × 1920, the same as the video. Instagram's profile grid now shows Reels as roughly 3:4 rectangles, so the top and bottom of your cover are cut off there - put the subject and any title text in the centre.

  • Choose a frame from the video or upload a designed image on the share screen
  • Title text on covers: big, two to four words, centred vertically
  • You can change the cover after posting without touching the video
  • Templates and sizing in the Reel cover design guide

FIX

Five spec problems and the one-line fix

Blurry after upload

Bitrate too low or variable fps

Re-export at 10–15 Mbps, constant 30 fps, and upload on Wi-Fi with highest-quality uploads on. Full guide.

Black bars

Wrong aspect ratio

The source is 16:9 or 4:5. Reframe to 9:16 in the editor - crop, or add a blurred background behind a landscape clip.

Text cut off

Outside the safe zone

Move captions up and left so they sit inside the centre 960 × 1250 px. Edits' caption tool keeps them there automatically.

Not reaching new people

Over 3 minutes

Trim to under 3 minutes, or split into parts. Watch time per view matters more than total length. Why Reels get low views.

Upload fails

Unsupported codec or too long

Convert HEVC to H.264, confirm the file is MP4 or MOV, and check it's under 20 minutes and 4 GB. Export failed in Edits?

Grid thumbnail looks wrong

Subject outside the 3:4 crop

Upload a dedicated cover with the subject centred, or pick a frame where the action sits in the middle third.

FAQ

Reels size and length - quick answers

For the basics of the format, start with What are Instagram Reels?; to make one, see how to make a Reel.

what size is an instagram reel
1080 × 1920 px, 9:16 vertical. Other sizes are accepted but scaled or letterboxed.
how long can an instagram reel be
Up to 20 minutes, minimum 3 seconds. Only Reels under 3 minutes are recommended to non-followers; 7–30 s performs best.
instagram reel max file size
4 GB. A typical 60-second 1080p Reel is 75–110 MB, so you'll rarely get close.
what format should a reel be
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. MOV also works. 30 fps and 10–15 Mbps for 1080p.
instagram reels safe zone
Keep text and faces out of roughly the top 250 px, bottom 420 px and right 120 px of the frame, where Instagram's UI sits.
reel cover photo size
1080 × 1920 px. The profile grid crops to about 3:4, so centre the subject and title.

reels vs tiktok size
Identical: 1080 × 1920, 9:16. Safe zones differ slightly, so re-check caption placement when you repurpose TikToks as Reels.

Export to spec, every time

Edits exports 1080 × 1920 H.264 at 30 fps by default - no watermark, safe zones shown on the timeline.
