Edits / Instagram Reels / Reel hooks
You have about two seconds before a viewer decides. The hook is the line, the text and the frame that fill them. Here are the 8 formulas every good hook is built on, then 60 ready-to-use examples across ten niches. Copy one, swap in your topic, film it.
A hook is the first one to three seconds of a Reel - the reason to keep watching. Instagram tests every Reel on a small audience and only pushes it wider if they stay, so the hook decides reach more than anything else you do. Most low-view Reels fail here.
A hook has three layers that should say the same thing: the text on frame one (most viewers are muted), the spoken first sentence (no "hey guys" before it), and the visual - the result, the face, the movement. Then deliver on it by second five.
Every hook that works is one of these with the blanks filled in. Learn the eight and you never stare at a blank text box again. The sixty examples below are each one formula applied to one niche.
Lead with the outcome, then show the path. Works whenever you have a number or a before/after.
Name a common error. Mild outrage plus the promise of a fix is the most reliable scroll-stopper.
Lists promise structure and an end. Three to five items; put the count on screen.
Two things side by side. The viewer stays to see which wins.
Implies insider knowledge. Deliver something non-obvious or it reads as bait.
A question the viewer has had. Answer it by second five.
Time-boxed experiment with a visible result. Series-friendly.
Names the viewer. Specific beats broad: "if you edit on your phone" over "if you make videos".
Ten niches, six hooks each, every formula represented. Each hook is written to be the on-screen text and the first spoken line. Not your niche? Pick the closest and swap the nouns - the structure is what works.

Things that give the thumb a head start. If any of these is in your first two seconds, the hook isn't.
"Hey guys", "welcome back", "so today I'm going to". One second gone, nothing promised. Start on the sentence after it.
Nobody is scrolling for your brand animation. Put it at the end if you must.
"So a few weeks ago I was thinking about…" Say the point, then the story.
Hook says "before and after", frame shows a face talking. Open on the after.
"The secret to…" followed by common knowledge. Viewers leave at second five and don't come back for the next one.
Nobody reads a paragraph in 1.5 seconds. Six to ten words. Cut adjectives first.
Edits has a teleprompter for the spoken line, a text tool for the on-screen one, and auto captions for everything after - free, no watermark.
