Edits / Instagram Reels / Reels monetization
Instagram doesn't pay per view. Most Reels income comes from what the Reels lead to - a product, a link, a sponsor - with Instagram's own Gifts, Subscriptions and bonuses as a top-up where they're offered. Here are the seven ways, ranked by what's realistic at 1K, 10K and 100K followers, the numbers sponsors ask for, and the media kit that gets the reply.
There's no per-view payment on Instagram by default. A Reel earns when it leads to one of three things: a product you sell, a link you earn from, or a brand that pays you to make it. Instagram's own programmes - Gifts, Subscriptions, partnership ads, occasional bonuses - sit on top of that, gated by country and eligibility, and they top up rather than replace it.
So the question isn't "how many views do I need" but "what do my Reels lead to". A 3,000-follower account with a $40 product and a 2% tap rate out-earns a 50,000-follower account with nothing to sell. The reach side is covered in What are Instagram Reels?; this page is the money side.
Follower count is the wrong metric for almost everything else on Reels, but it's what sponsors and Instagram's eligibility rules look at first. Here's what opens at each stage - and the earlier one keeps working as you grow.
Note: ranges are typical for English-language creators in buying niches and vary a lot by country, niche and engagement. Instagram's native programmes (Gifts, Subscriptions, bonuses, Creator Marketplace) have country and eligibility rules that change - check Professional Dashboard → Monetization status for your account rather than any article, including this one.
Ranked by how reliable they are and how early they work. The first three are where most of the money is; four to seven are Instagram's own programmes and depend on eligibility.
The most reliable Reels income, and the one that works at 300 followers. A Reel shows the thing doing its job, the price is on screen, the link in bio takes the order. Physical products, a service, a digital download, a template, a course, a booking - anything with a link.
The Reel formats are in Reels for small business; the key number is profile visits ÷ views, then link taps. Don't have a product? A $10 digital one - a checklist, a preset pack, a guide - takes a weekend to make and turns the account into a business.
You recommend a product you use, with a tracked link in your bio; the seller pays a commission on sales. Amazon, LTK, brand programmes, software referral links. It's the natural income for "3 ways I use it", tool reviews, packing lists and "what I bought" Reels.
Commissions are small per sale (3–10% physical, 20–50% software) so it needs volume or a high ticket. The Reel is evergreen: a product Reel keeps earning from your profile for months. Disclose with #ad or "affiliate link" in the caption - it's required and viewers don't mind.
A brand pays you to make a Reel featuring them. Below 10K the deals are small or gifted; above it, this becomes most creators' main income. The common starting rule: ~1% of your follower count in dollars per Reel (10K → ~$100), adjusted up for a buying niche or strong engagement, down for broad entertainment. Package deals (3 Reels + Stories) pay better than single posts.
Rates are a function of your numbers - average views, engagement, audience location - not just followers; a 5K account with 50K average Reel views out-earns a 50K account with 2K. Use the Paid partnership label, quote usage rights separately, and reply with the media kit below. Deals also come through Instagram's Creator Marketplace once eligible.
Viewers buy Stars and send them as Gifts on your Reels; you cash out the Stars. Available in a growing list of countries to professional accounts that meet Instagram's monetization policies. It's a tip jar: it works for creators with a warm audience and does nothing for a cold one.
Turn it on in Professional Dashboard once eligible, mention it occasionally, never beg. Earnings are modest for most; a few niches (music, comedy, live-adjacent) do well. Check Monetization status for your account - availability varies by country and changes.
Followers pay a monthly fee you set for subscriber-only Reels, Stories, badges and chats. Recurring, predictable, and it grows with loyalty rather than reach - the opposite of every other number on Instagram. Eligibility needs a professional account, a minimum follower count and a supported country.
It works when you already give a lot away and the subscriber tier is more of the same, earlier: extended tutorials, the uncut version, a weekly Q&A. 200 subscribers at $2.99 is $600 a month, every month. Promote it in a pinned Reel and once a week in Stories.
A brand takes a Reel you made for them and runs it as an ad from your account, with your approval, using their budget. You're paid for the content plus the usage; the brand gets your face and your audience's trust in front of people far beyond your followers.
This is where deals get bigger: quote usage rights (how long, where) separately from the content fee - a Reel used in ads for six months is worth 2–3× the organic post. Set it up under Professional Dashboard → Branded content → allow partnership ads, per brand.
Instagram has run Reels bonus programmes that pay invited creators for views in some countries, and has paused, changed and relaunched them several times. If your account is offered one, it shows under Professional Dashboard → Monetization status, with its own terms and caps.
Take it if offered; treat it as a bonus on top of ways 1–3, never as the plan. The requirement that stays constant across every version: original content, not reposts, and no visible watermarks from other apps - see repurposing TikToks.
