Edits / Instagram Reels / Reels vs Stories
Short answer: Reels to be found, Stories to stay in touch. Reels go to strangers and stay forever; Stories go to followers and vanish in 24 hours. Everything else - length, features, engagement, effort - follows from that. The full comparison, a decision guide for 12 real situations, and the routine that uses both.
A Reel is a permanent vertical video that Instagram shows to people who don't follow you - in the Reels tab, in Explore, in strangers' feeds. Its job is to be found. A Story is a photo or clip that shows only to your followers, at the top of their feed, for 24 hours. Its job is to keep the people you already have close.
That one split explains every other difference. Reels need a hook and captions because strangers judge them in two seconds; Stories can be raw because friends forgive. Reels have no clickable links because they're for discovery; Stories have link stickers because they're for action. Neither is better - they do different jobs. The basics of the format are in What are Instagram Reels?.
Shown to non-followers. Stays on your profile. Judged by strangers in the first 2 seconds.
Shown to followers only. Gone in 24 hours. Built for a reply, not a view count.
Bold marks the format that wins each row. Feed posts are left out here; they're compared in the Reels vs Stories vs posts table.

Find your situation; the tag on the right is the answer. The rule behind all of them: will this matter next month, and should strangers see it? Yes to both → Reel. No to both → Story.
The accounts that grow don't choose. They post Reels to bring people in and Stories to keep them, and they connect the two: every new Reel gets shared to the Story the same day. Most followers never see a new Reel in their feed; the Story share puts it in front of them, and those early views help the Reel pass Instagram's test audience - see how reach works.
Tap the paper-plane → Add to story. Add a one-line "new Reel ↑" and a sticker. Followers tap through; the Reel gets its first-hour views.
A poll, a behind-the-scenes clip, a reply to a DM. Keeps the ring lit and your followers warm - which makes them likelier to be shown your next Reel.
A question several people asked becomes a Reel that reaches strangers with the same question. The Story is the research; the Reel is the answer.
Save the Story share of each strong Reel to a Highlight ("Tutorials", "Before/after"). Highlights outlive the 24 hours and sit on your profile under the bio.
A good Story clip can become a Reel: save it to camera roll, add a text hook and captions, upload. Guide: how to make a Reel.
Edits cuts, captions and exports the Reel with no watermark; Instagram does the rest - both free.
