Edits / Instagram Reels / Reels from photos
No video, no problem. A camera roll of photos becomes a Reel in five minutes - and done right, it doesn't look like a slideshow. Six steps: pick the photos, add them, time them to the beat, give them motion, add text, post. Plus the photo formats that get reach without a single clip.
Four numbers cover almost every question about photo Reels. The full video spec sheet is in the Reels size and length guide.
Pick → add → time → motion → text → post. Each step shows the Edits route and, in the pink box, the Instagram-only route.
Step 01
A photo Reel lives or dies on selection. Pick 8 to 12 images with one subject each, in the order they tell the story - arrival to departure, before to after, step 1 to step 5. Vertical photos fill the frame; square ones get a crop or bars; landscape ones need a blurred background.
Step 02
Three routes. Instagram camera: Create (+) → Reel → tap the gallery → select the photos in order; Instagram auto-times them. Templates: tap Templates, pick a Reel whose timing you like, and drop your photos into its slots. Edits: New project → import the photos; each becomes a 3-second clip on the timeline you control fully.
Step 03
Pick a track - trending if you can catch one - then make the photos change on the beat. In Edits, beat markers sit on the audio track; drag each photo's edge to the next marker and it snaps. 0.5–1 s per photo for a montage, 1.5–3 s for storytelling. Never over 4 seconds; the eye has nothing to do.
Step 04
This is the step that separates a Reel from a slideshow. A still image that doesn't move for two seconds feels dead; a 5–10% slow zoom or pan over the same two seconds feels like footage. In Edits, Animate applies it in one tap, or set two keyframes (start scale 100%, end scale 108%) per photo. Alternate zoom-in and zoom-out so it doesn't pulse.
Step 05
Photo 1 carries the hook - "30 days in Japan in 30 photos", "Our kitchen, before and after", "Every outfit I wore in March". The rest get one or two-word labels where they help: a place, a day number, a price. Captions aren't needed unless there's a voiceover. Keep all text inside the safe zone.
Step 06
From Instagram, tap Next → Edit cover and pick the strongest photo (usually the first), write a caption that repeats the hook, add 3–5 hashtags and tap Share. From Edits, export at 1080 × 1920 with no watermark and post it through Instagram the same way.
No video required for any of these. Each card shows the hook formula, the per-photo timing and the one thing that makes it work. More in the full list of 50 Reels ideas.
The last 30 days in 10 photos, fast cuts on a trending sound. The easiest Reel to make and one of the most-shared.
Two or three befores, a beat, then the afters. Hold the final after longest.
One photo per day or stop with a place label on each. The map version of a photo dump.
Recipe, build, routine - one photo per step, numbered. Save-bait.
Flat lay, detail, in use, packaging. Slow zoom on each. The no-video product Reel.
Old photo, new photo, old, new. Transformation over time, any niche.
Same photos, two formats. Pick by what you want them to do.
| Photo Reel | Carousel post | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | Followers + non-followers via the Reels tab | Mostly followers, some Explore |
| Pace | You set it - photos change on the beat | Viewer swipes at their own speed |
| Music | Yes, full library, trending audio | Yes, but one track, no beat timing |
| Photo limit | No practical limit (keep to 8–12) | Up to 20 slides |
| Detail | Low - each photo shows 1–3 s | High - viewers can linger and zoom |
| Saves | Good for lists and steps | Best for reference content |
| Best for | Reach, mood, transformations, dumps | Detail, product specs, tutorials to keep |
A common pattern: post the Reel for reach, then the carousel of the same photos two days later for the people who want to linger. The format differences are in What are Instagram Reels?.
Edits imports your photos, snaps them to the beat and animates every one - free, no watermark.
